What is MPUZ?

MPUZ (em-puhz) is a game in production by Xgoff. As can be readily inferred from the title, it is a puzzle game; not only that, but it's a Mario-based puzzle game. Amazing. MPUZ is based on a custom engine written in Lua and "hosted" by MMF2, with focus on modularity and event-based scripting.

MPUZ may be better described as an "action-puzzle" game, because it is designed for active solving rather than idle thought. Various obstacles and level conditions will present themselves, making some levels a little difficult to complete if you aren't moving.

Story

ONE DAY MARIO AWOKE, SUNLIGHT BEAMING THROUGH HIS WINDOW, BIRDS CHIRPING WONDERFUL SONG, AND A SLIGHT LINGERING AROMA OF PASTA ENAMORATING HIS NOSTRILS WITH PASSIONATE LOVE.

"OH BOY WHAT A GLORIOUS DAY~~~! TO KICK SOME ASS C:", EXCLAIMED MARIO, AS HE HAPPILY THRUST HIS GIRTH IN SUCH A DISPLAY OF INDESCRIBABLE SPLENDOR FROM HIS BED, THE FLOORBOARDS CREAKING IN AGONY AS HIS COLOSSAL MASS FLEXED THEM INTO OBLIVION

... i.e. it's still in the planning stages

Ideas
Music
  • Modules, hopefully; preferably ITs
  • Practically all of it would be remixes
Graphics
  • Shader abuse C:
  • Still don't know a whole lot about the style
  • Maybe 32x32 base tile size?!?!?
I bet there are some awesome powerups right

No powerups whatsoever... or at least the "suit" type like fireballs etc. I might add Kuribo Shoes because those are awesome and you could only use them in like one or two levels in SMB3 :C. But anyway Mario won't be shooting fireballs or throwing hammers!

This also means this will be another one of those "no small Mario" fangames; not because I'm lazy, but because there are other ways to get into small places...

Control methods

Keyboard obviously. Additionally I'll probably add native Wii Remote and Classic Controller support for those of you who need an excuse to actually pick one of those controllers up again. MPUZ uses a ****ton of buttons/keys (like 15 or something), though half of those are related and are really only for convenience. Also 4 of those are directional so i can exaggerate and look sophisticated :>.

Download? Demo? Engine test?
Not yet :>
Wow did it really take 3 years just to barely get anywhere?

Yes and shut up >:(

MPUZ has been through a lot and is practically an entirely different game than it was (going to be) in 2006. For example, MPUZα would have been entirely in MMF2, with only media and levels editable. Not too long after, MPUZβ decided to at least make objects editable, but that was far from perfect. MPUZγ, being the current incarnation, is essentially completely customizable... not that it matters a whole lot because nobody will even bother :<

Also, the gameplay features are making the engine ridiculously complex; i really should drop some of them but that's no fun now is it :>

jesus christ xgoff my eyes

sorry :<

i'll make this post a little more attractive when i get around to it

Just one curious question, Xgoff -- how long have you been working on this fangame itself? I've been interested in this since day one. tongue.gif

17 months?!

Good god. Well I guess it's not that bad. I have spent 2 months on mine and haven't even released a demo yet.

It's just I am a perfectionist, and im not 100% skilled in MMF2 to solve everything in 5 minutes on my own.

Lol @ name though.
mario's pitiful adventure and xgoff awesome games series?

^ You've got that right; the production on my first fangame took me like almost half a year to get the majority of stuff right. Time is very demanding if you want to get stuff right, especially when it comes to the Event List. o_O

i'll be surprised if i manage to break 1000 events because about 90% of this game will probably be lua scripts

most of said events will be related to the lua functions themselves

EDIT: ok maybe i won't be surprised because the menu system is ~120 events and it isn't even done yet

Personally, that's my LEAST favorite part of developing in TGF -- level design is one thing, but of course -- without an Event List for each level, you don't even have an actual operation to go by when the game is done.

Anyways, I'm glad you're really, truthfully making this. And especially that you're making it in MMF2 -^.^-

If I knew how to script in LUA I would do that, but ah just looking at it, looks confusing.

1,000 is insane? Then it looks like I have done the insane.

Brutal! Don't work too hard, man.

Oh, and one tip -- if you're using Clickteam products -- use the "image" feature of the Events List. It's more helpful. wink.gif

Nothing personal, but at least when we have the mouse pointer over the icon, it'll show the name of the object in question. ^_^

The only advantage is that in the case of the Clickteam projects, the possibilities are endless in getting games to the way we want them. :P (provided we do it correctly, of course)

no they aren't

If they were, I would have been able to create a fantastic game right now.

I love MMF2, but I really despise the lack of a complete coding structure to work with.

I wish I knew LUA before I started my game...The only thing using the phzix extension is the ragdoll I made, everything else that looks "physicy" was built with other events, pain in the ass I may add.

I'm not saying it's THAT bad to have 1,000+ event. The main concern is that the level itself upon testing is how you want it to be from start to finish.

That's the only thing I hate about the "Event List" procedure in the Games Factory -- when I notice something missing upon trying the level out, I'm like -- AAAGGGHHH!!!! EVENT LIST EDIT!!!! -- meaning I'm forced to go through all that code there to see what in God's name is missing or what went wrong.
