A mini-boss concept from Someguy:
Sumo Thwomp
Basically, a large cubish Thwomp, like the one from Super Mario 64, but with arms and legs and a typical sumo diaper thing. It would be faced on a circular platform, kind of like a sumo ring, but with a pit of spikes instead of a simple line on the ground. The large Thwomp stands and looks menacingly at Mario/Wario, and occasionally stomping the ground sumo-style, causing rocks to fall from the ceiling and maybe even stun the player like the Sledge Bros. of SMB3. After a bit the Sumo Thwomp will charge, attempting to push Mario/Wario off into the spikes unless the player uses one of the rocks that fell to the ground to hop over him. As the boss teeters on the edge of the ring, the player needs to run behind and push against the boss to shove him into the spikes. The boss will launch back out in pain and continue the fight, maybe increasing the speed/magnitude of the attacks slightly. Doing this three times would finish it for good.
This mini-boss could really work for either Mario or Wario, but given that it's based on a classic Mario enemy, it might fit in best on the Mario side.
I'll try and draw up some concept art of it when I get the chance.

If it has arms and legs, why not just make it a Whomp?

I think Bowser Jr. should be in the game along with all of his siblings. And I have an idea for a boss fight with him:
You get to the big red boss door at the end of a tower, castle, or fortress. Suddenly you find yourself on the roof. It's late at night, and it's totally quiet. Suddenly, Bowser Jr. files in on a personal aircraft, like the one in Galaxy. He flies above you, firing bullet bills at you. Now, there are two cannons on the rooftop, one on either end of the roof. As Bowser Jr. flies back and forth, he will eventually fly right over one of them. You'll have to stomp a switch to make the cannon fire a Bomb-Omb Buddy at his ship and do it damage. Each time he's hit, he fires more and more bullet bills and bomb-ombs at you. After his ship's taken 3-5 hits, it explodes, but Bowser Jr.'s able to jump off and land on the roof in front of you. You then have to fight him sorta like you would in NSMB, with him throwing bomb-ombs which need to be tossed back at him.
Whaddya think?

We have a thread for that http://archive.mfgg.net/index.php?showtopic=202744hmm if you are going to make Sumo Thwomp as a mini boss, what level would he be in?
