I think it'd be cool to have a leitmotif in the game. Like, a few of us collaborate and make a theme song for the game. After that, the other musicians would create their own pieces, tying in the main theme.

Just an idea. Twilight Princess is a prime example of this, if you wanted a reference point.

yes

Twilight Princess? That game has a lot of variety of notes and chords for the music. I think a better example is Banjo Kazooie.

Unless you mean only a few songs would use the same notation, which could be do-able. We could try that, but there are a few musicians that want to create their own musical songs to fit the style of the scene/level, and don't want to be constrained to using just the notation that has to be used.

Not saying this is a bad idea, though, it'd be nice to use across some songs, definitely.

As for the collaboration of the theme music, that'd be cool. We just need to make sure whoever is collaborating on his has around the same quality instrumentation.

Sure, there's Banjo Kazooie, James Bond, what have you. I was saying Twilight Princess used the same notes in a lot of songs. A lot of them were in different keys, yes, but the majority of the songs played off of Midna's theme. But yeah, a lot of games have used leitmotif.

And you bring up a good point: not all of the songs need to have the same notation. For battles and a few of the level though, I think it'd be cool to implement this style of composition.

Oh, definitely, I agree, it'd be really awesome to try!

I'd like to help with the theme's collaboration, but the extent of my music powers is limited to MIDI files. How do you think the several composers should work together to get the song written?

I think what should be done, if we want to include several people, is to use the hierarchy of quality (that is, quality of instruments, not of the music itself, I don't believe people's abilities in music should be marked down just because they use MIDI, it's what the music does, and what you do with it that matters).

Have the people who have an idea, that create MIDI's work together on one.

Then it gets sent to people who use trackers, like Modplug Tracker, or Tracker II, or what tracker have you. They can also switch the instruments with better quality samples.

Then it gets sent to anyone who uses more advanced, usually paying-for utilities, like FL Studio, Cubase, Reason, those professional programs. They can also switch instruments for better quality samples or VSTi's.

Then it'll finally get sent to me at the end, I'll do what I can do finalize it, send it through mass EQing and effecting in my music studio, then render it and bada-bing.

So, we need a basic theme.. I was thinking a simple tone that can become familiar to the player quickly, so it's easy enough to make for inexperienced composers.

Yes, that's usually what happens.

But let's not worry about getting it going yet, there's still a lot more to be done before we can start actually contemplating the music.

I dunno why, but I always imagined a Waluigi Battle with an orchestrated remix of the Lava music from Wario Land.
Or should the main characters even HAVE themes? Maybe the different teams can different theme songs.

Well you could try the main theme for the game, sort of a catchy, easy to learn tune that everyone would like. That'd rock.

Well I've done some music, but I doubt either of these will be kept. They were done with the "main theme" in mind, but perhaps you guys would want something more Mario-y, I dunno.

File A
File B

File A would be the original idea for a main theme, and File B is a sort of spin-off. Also, I'd hold off on making a music topic until we get some concrete levels decided.

I like B the most because of its faster pace, but the instruments used make it have a LoZ feel.

Title Screen Music

file B:
File Select

That could work, but that is only if we use these pieces. :P

And generally the title screen showcases the main theme of the game, so even this were to be used, I doubt it'd be the main theme. I also don't see File B being a very good file for selection screen music, as it is rather fast-paced. :x

Wow. those are great music pieces.

I think, as far as a letmotif, that's a great idea, but have a jazzy/techno one for the Wario Bros. and a whimsical/magical one for the Mario Bros?

Hmm... Very cathy, but so far this is our only choise, so I'd wait until some other themes are in before we use this.

If you could make the second a tad slower and add a little mario-ish gameplay spin, it'd work for main levels.

Then slow it down and do what smw did to make water levels.

So with some editing:

-Title/menu
-Main levels
-Water levels
