March 30th, 2007~Drawings - Duckboy"Lucario" Suggested by Ashura I love Duckboy's art; he is one my idols. He used to post a lot in the arts board but became inactive for a while. He eventually came back and posted this gem, and it shows that his talent in cartoons hasn't weared off at all during his retirement. I think this drawing is excellent because of its execution. I've seen Lucario be drawn a lot in fanart at Deviantart, but I find that many of them fail to stand out. Duckboy made this stand out as much as he could, and I found his attempt successful. The lineart, coloring, and cartoony expression are all great. The sunset scene is simple yet highly expressive with its use of intense bright colors. The sun is bright, yet fails to overcast its subject, Lucario. Lucario is an anthromorphic dog-like pokemon introduced in Diamond and Pearl. In this picture, it is drawn like a cartoon, with overexaggerated proportions and simplified coloring. Duckboy does a good job at expressing its furiousity by making it growl like a dog. Lucario stands out with its thick outlines and shading; I found nothing from the bright background to be distracting. Everything fits extremely well in this drawing. Therefore, I think its execution makes this drawing excellent. Sprites - Shyguy grey"The little green guy" Suggested by DJ Yoshiman | QUOTE (DJ Yoshiman) | [01:41] Yoshiman Cool: I just like how almost simple it is, and I also like the fact that it has something most Yoshi sprite sheets don't have: [01:42] Yoshiman Cool: Two versions of it - one with Yoshi standing up, and one that actually allows a Mario sprite to sit on it, not many spriters have actually thought of doing this. |
I have been friends with Shyguy grey since early 2007, and he was a pretty good spriter back then. He has definitely improved since then, and this excellent custom sprite sheet of yoshi proves it. I think that this sprite sheet is excellent because of its usability. It's an extremely well balanced sprite sheet of yoshi which I think will be used a lot in fangames.Yoshi is my favorite mario character and I really wanted to see a usable custom sprite sheet of her, but most of the custom sprites that I've seen are not as usable as this. Not many spriters have thought of spriting yoshi in two different ways. One section has with yoshi standing up (if the designer wants her to to be an independent character), and another that is the same animations but slightly modified to allow a mario sprite to sit on it (Super Mario World style). Also, the colors are nicely done. It has a good light source, making each part of yoshi's body easily noticable. Also, the outlines are just perfect; they are thick enough to be noticed but thin enough to not be distracting. Finally, it has just about every animation yoshi can have, like jumping or throwing eggs, and when animated they are smooth and well done. It even accounts for when Yoshi's mouth is full by having a different section with modified cheeks; it doesn't leave anything out that spriters have to custom make. That's why I think its usability makes this sprite sheet excellent. Misc - Wash Your Hands Man!"Freak Toy Express" Suggested by Tragedy Anne | QUOTE (Tragedy Anne) | | "I really like this, because it's so much different from the drawings, sprites, etc. It's great to see some different stuff once in a while. This has so much detail, and quite honestly, it's kind of freaky. The paint job makes it look really cool, and it goes well wit the level of detail on the toy itself. great work!" |
I guess I am biased towards people work. I love cartoons that are cute and colorful. However, I am usually freaked out by Wash Your Hands Man!'s drawings because they are usually bizaree and dark. But this drawing certainly stands out from his others, as he did a good job on designing this toy.
I think this toy is excellent because of its detail. It looks very professional looking. From what I've seen, most of the toys posted on MFGG are simplified, basic or small. However, this one is extremely detailed and quite large. I believe that the artist really wanted to show what he could do with time and patience. For example, every part of its body is finely detailed, to its shoulders to its arms and to its giant bull like head. Each individual unit on it is easily noticable and well crafted. Also, every part looks like it makes sense, like if it was a functioning robot; if this could be animated, it would look like it would move freely. The parts on its thighs are similar to our own leg muscles in design and the arms, although not similar to a human's, look like they can easily sway in all directions. The amount of effort put into it is incredible and the final result looks nothing less than awesome. That is why I think its detail makes this toy excellent.
