GM makes me mad. You fix one problem, you are then encountered by 50 more. I would use MMF2, but I don't have +$100 to spend on the stupid program. I don't know what to use. I just want to make at least one Mario game for myself, but GM is just too hard for ME to start on.

I see no queation... but...

I suggest you start with something simpler than a mario game and work your way up.

Game Maker is pretty much... as easy as it gets.

Practice, it helps. Look at tutorials before you jump into game making.

Like I haven't been trying. Besides, I don't know what other kind of game to try to make.

maze games are good to start off with

and then move on to moving an object around on platforms (no mario or enemies or gimmicks)

You're too impatient. Do you think all you can do is snap your fingers and become an instant success? Take the default examples and study them, learn what each function is for and what it does. Experiment with the functions, try editing/removing them to see what happens and remember it. Beginning GameMaker or any other game creation program (including MMF2) requires you to study and dedicate some of your time to it.

I use GameMaker myself and when I first started, I wasn't any good either and I was in the same situation as you. However, instead of complaining about it, I tried over and over again and now I can make great things in GM with ease.

Have some patience and try again, thats the best advice I can give you.

This makes me feel stupid because I can't understand everything.

Edit:Ah forget it. I won't even worry about this crap anymore whenever I get Brawl anyway. unsure.gif

Start learning how to do breakout. Get the basic game working, and then add in power ups, and see what you can do with the engine to make it colourful, exciting, and efficient. Then move on from there. Simple games for design's sake will help you get the hang of GM.

Its gonna take a while to learn the basics of GM....you can't just make a Mario game when you first start GM unless your magic or something...but yea, look at the tutorials/examples included with GM and look on the main site for some examples too.
Just be patient..my first game was called Bouncy Balls...you had to control a spaceship and hit different color balls...Ya, it stunk, but it was a good first try. Just try.

Well, maybe you should try A simple move & Touch game, then a Maze(like pacman) and then, maybe a Breakout, and then, some gravity stuff, then don't try coding unless you understand all of Drag & Drop, then you should try using some basic coding. It took like 5 years for me to understand Coding of GM, and yet I still haven't gotten all of it.

You should really never use Jump to a given position for movement, instead, use hspeed & vspeed.

I know the part about jump to position.

Yeah I saw that and then I freaked out when I realized it wasn't out. Well I'm going to try to make a game like that tutorial on YoYo Games with the clown thing. Of course with mario characters. lol

Edit:Dang I'm stupid. I got all mad about this and in like 15 minutes I made my first game by myself. I know I said that I would use one of the tutorials but since this time I have GM6 I had to do it myself but it is starting to work. The object of the game is to click on Mario as he flies across the screen, bouncing off the blocks that I have around the whole room, and clicking on him increases your score. He also then appears at some random place and moves a little bit faster. But then I added Bowser and he does the same things only if you click him it takes points away.

Sorry for the double post but what should I do now? I basically finished my first game. I just need to figure out how to make a high score thing at the end and a way to lose and its done.

*sigh* this is No way to learn GM. All I did was goto the Tutorials section of the GM forums (didnt have the open source forum back then, so use that now) and download like EVERYTHING that looked good, then I just tooled around with them, well, after awhile of this, I decided to make a game alone, and I found that all the stuff I had looked at in those open source examples came back to me, and I was able to code with the skill level that most of them were made.

My basic point is that posting on a forum saying "how do I do things?" isn't going to get you very far in GM, working at it, alone, will do you alot better.

In other words, Trial and Error will get you far.

You can get a high score thing by going and Downloading the 1-player(non-3d) Shooter Tutorial on Yoyogames and looking at the No More Lives event(Not too sure).

Or download GM 6(.1) and find the 1964(Or something) game and looking at the No More Lives Event.

Many members of GMC can help you as well, however, they're usually going to ask for your script first. They never like making scripts for noobs....

Don't. just use the drag and drop buttons whenever you can. Try to get into scripting. I find it way easier than clicking buttons, and you actually get more options to work with, including the D&D ones.

Dang it I knew that once I got Brawl I wouldn't want to do this anymore. I made one game, but now I don't even know if I want to make a Mario game anymore.

Edit: I'm probably just going to wait until Stencyl comes out. huh.gif
