The concept I was working on now has a sprite form, I used a Mario sprite strictly for reference purposes.

The sprite is of decent build, but I think the colors could use some more contrast and saturation. I'd also try mixing different shades of red (like, the lightest shade could be more orangey or something). I never really liked the gradient red look, myself.

But as I said, the shape of the sprite is nice. I especially like the face.

Try hueshifting a tad? Also, lower the saturation a bit as the red looks close to MSPaint default red. The lineart is great, though!

Hueshifting is, when shading, instead of simply using a darker/lighter version of a color you instead "shift" it's hue a bit while still keeping it close to the original color


For example, for a lighter shade of red you could use a reddish orange, or for a darker shade a reddish purple.


It makes shading seem less bland if you shift just the right amount

This. I didn't know the proper term for it in my post. :P

Yeah I noticed the shading on the shirt was a bit pillowy, same with the hat so I changed a few pixels.

Actually, I think it's fine as-is. Although I did notice that you used two different variations of your lightest shade of red. One on the hat and a different one on the shirt.

Mario's feet are arranged in such a way that it could be either the left or the right moving, and his arms don't seem to bounce about like this one's do.
