It became elite with quality of fangames and sprites a while before MFGG did. Everybody was scared that they'd get immediately flamed and thrown down if they posted there during that time, which did happen quite a number of times.

Not to mention the whole MFGG VS SFGHQ fiasco didn't help with that.
