And Upgrade the processor to the new AMD Phenom Quad-Core processor.

You sure about that? You need an AM2+-compatible socket and a BIOS that recognizes the Phenom.

Besides, the Intels are so much better than the Phenom right now.

For not being an expensive-as-all-get-out quad-core processor, the Wolfedales (E8xxx) are really nice. Hence why they're out of stock on the Internet right now. But since I rebuilt last February, I have a lower-end E6xxx.

Edit: I think there's been a severe price-adjustment on the Q9xxx since I last checked!

who wants two cores when you can have four and never use two of them

well, if i get into 3D modeling more, then a quad-core would be orgasmic... or maybe even the six-core processors intel is working on right now

I know this this computer has the AM2 socket becuase I checked my computers specs at Compaqs site. And I do relize if I do get the AMD Phenom Quad-Core. That I'm going to have to update my computers BIOS so it can recognize it.

Then you should be fine with the BIOS upgrade.
Socket AM2+ processors can be put into AM2 motherboards; they'll just run at HyperTransport 2.0 and only have one power plane.

Separate power planes mean that your the processing bits of the CPU can be run at a different voltage than the integrated memory controller.
HyperTransport is how AMD processors connect to other bits of the computer, instead of a front side bus. HT 2.0 is about 1.0 GHz, while HT 3.0 (on AM2+) is 2.6 GHz.
