I don't have the game at home so it's harder to decide, but I got really good at it just from playing it at the game store (and since I already have melee). But I'm really good with Sonic and Ike. The only down side is his standard B move. My opponent can SIT STILL and he'll over shoot. >:[

Ikes up b is good for ledge saves and killing the **** out of people. If you want to get to a place from far away, just use > b. Ike is hard to use but if used right he can send people flying. His best attacks are ^ b, smash > a, and smash ^ a.
