A system of leveling up adapted to a character progressively over the game.

Zelda has RPG elements, but is actually categorized under "action adventure."

If you believe Zelda is an RPG, you will then also believe that Monkey Island, Sam & Max, Day of the Tentacle and the old LucasArts point 'n click adventure games are also RPG's, which no way in hell are they RPG's.

The moment you say a very big invalid statement, MFGG members pounce on you.

Also, attacks/actions? Eh? That's the basic functionality of every single video game that has any attacking in it - the action of pressing a button will make your character attack.

I know. The reason I stated isn't the only factor in an RPG but it's in virtually every one.

Also it's pretty hard to explain what I'm getting at. Kingdom Hearts its an example when a action/adventure game is pure RPG.
