READ for info on what you can do to help.

-Discuss your opinions and ideas here first, before we start making any music.-

This topic is to discuss music more thoroughly than the last music topic. But for reference, you can check back to that one.

One big aspect we had talked about was the use of a leitmotif, or a repeated chord or musical phrase that is repeated throughout the game. This would mean incorporating a select few notes into a lot of the songs - a challenge we need to decide whether to attempt or not.

If we were to do this, we would need to establish the theme first. If anyone is willing to step up and give it a try, you are more than welcome to. The ultimate theme should be chosen by the community, if not exclusively by the people who have to work in the theme's frame.

After and if we do the leitmotif, we are somewhat hindered by the progress of the rest of the game. We have a general idea of what kind of levels there will be, but nothing is set in stone. So don't like, start making anything yet.

To check on what levels we need done, we will refer to the Level Topic.

All together, we only need somewhere around 20-25 pieces.

If I may direct your attention here for a moment, you'll find a sample theme and two very different remixes of the same theme. okay, nevermind then.

I would also like to make a few suggestions:
  • having a leitmotif to work from is much easier than not having one at all;
  • I strongly recommend that the two separate games use separate themes (until such time as you see a character from the other game); and finally
  • whatever leitmotif or theme is decided on in the end, please please don't make each song a note-for-note remix with different instruments and tempo. Those get old. In my oft-inflated opinion.

I think leitmotifs are fine, but let's just not overboard like SMW and make a ton of different versions of essentially the same song.

Yeah, if we use a leitmotif it should be a more subtle one, rather than having every song be a remix.

I believe we still need to get other things done before we contemplate music. We need some sort of visual to build our music upon.

I hesitated because of that, but I don't think its too early to discuss the music. For instance,
QUOTE

gives us something to talk about.

We can discuss to a limited extent, but we can't really start creating music for the game before we get some visuals of the style of things like the menu, the levels, the gameplay (someone could make a visually bright level and it looks fine, but if the music created for it is fast and the camera is intentionally one of the slow automatic scrolling, it makes the player want to move through it too fast for the scroller; this is just an example).

I liked it in toad strikes back when T.D. remixed songs to go in places where they didn't belong. Like yoshis island song underwater and The peaches castle song during one of the boss battles.

How about remixes in certain areas only?
For example, I was thinking about the Rawest Forest, and for a forest level if it froze over it could have a winter remix.

We're not using remixes that belong to anyone outside of this project, so Rawest Forest won't go in there.

But, yeah, we can have a few remixes. But we want more original music than anything.

Hmmm. so one of the remixes could be, say, the Underground theme, since it is remixed in almost every Mario game, yet it is remixed while almost all of the other music in the game is exclusive to that game only.

And a leitmotif is fine by me as long as it doesn't butcher the game like YIDS :X

The leitmotif idea sounds excellent, as stated before. Remixes of pieces our CFP music makers would work, also. Also, could be pay a homage or two to the classic Mario Bros. Theme? It's always a fan favorite.

Since I'm not very musically skilled, so I don't have much to say, but I would like to remind everyone that the game's theme is basically a hunt for ancient treasure. Just something to keep in mind when thinking of a leitmotif.

I don't care what music is in this game, as long as none of them are MIDIs.

Don't worry. If any are made, me or Yoshiman can change them to mp3s

This is good to think about indeed!

Also, demon masta, there will more than likely be MIDIs in this game. Lots of people here use MIDI editing software. There will be other formats for cutscenes and probably some levels. From what I understand, however, the majority of the levels will run with a MIDI or something similar in the background.

I really don't understand what problem people have with MIDIs. I think they sound all right.

People expect everyone that makes fangames to always use mp3's/ogg's or modules of some sort, and also expect that everyone now-a-days has high speed internet that can download a potentially 50 MB fangame (because of the high quality music) in 30 seconds flat.

It's basically due to people having too many high expectations for something that we do, which is free to make and play.

If MIDIs are allowed, I can help. I have a few ideas for music for a boss battle.

50!?!
Why would anyone want to download a fan game thats 50mb?
