50!?!
Why would anyone want to download a fan game thats 50mb?

That's why I only ever use MIDIs when making fangames. Suppose Toad Strikes Back had all its MIDI music replaced by MP3 files. It would be so huge in terms of filesize that nobody would download it, despite its awesomeness, because of the sheer length of the download time. I'm pretty sure you'd be incredibly annoyed if you waited half an hour for something to download only to find out it was total rubbish, so you don't take the chance if you see a large file size.

Exactly.

Though it might be worth it if the game is really good.

Better than waiting 3 days to download an episode of Half-Life 2 via Steam.

which is, on average, around 4 to 5 gigabytes

I think now would be a good as time as ever to start work on the leitmotif. So please, if you could, start coming up with ideas.

Things to keep in mind:
  • The theme of the game is "ancient treasure hunting".
  • This leitmotif can be anywhere from three notes to a few measures long.
  • You need to have it capture the mood of the entire game and yet be flexible enough to bend to certain levels' atmospheres.
  • Don't try to make it sound Mario-y. If you've got the game's theme in mind when making this, the rest of the music will make the leitmotif fit.
  • If you need a reference to a leitmotif used in a video game, I'll post some links later in this post.
Twilight Princess
-- The first two themes you hear are the "extended" themes, if you will. After that, you'll hear a shorter leitmotif used throughout the game (note how short it is and also how its mood changes). I'd also like to note that it's those 3 notes you hear in the last half of the clip that play when you call Midna. Listen at about 0:47.

And silly me, I neglected to include this and this in that compilation. These exemplify some more dramatic leitmotif uses: a desert theme and a western theme.

The music won't be huge, rest assured.

Now if I could direct your attention to this post, now is the time to start working on a theme.

Your help would be a very good thing. Just come up with a few ideas for the leitmotif, perhaps? Big 'ol description in that post a few posts up.

so the leitmotif thing is like how in pokemon all the routes sound similar, but are different, yes?

Hmm.. I don't play enough Pokemon to remember, haha. But in that post I have a link to a compiled Twilight Princess thing that lets you hear what I'm talking about. It's basically the same notes repeated across songs.

If you guys are going to be using MIDI's, you should probably just use Modules instead. Modules are MIDI format so they're pretty much made the same way, they'll sound almost exactly the same on different computer systems (differing in raw sound quality and not by entire mismatched soundcard instruments), and they're barely any larger than MIDI files are in the first place.

What the hell is a leifmotif?
QUOTE
The word has also been used by extension to mean any sort of recurring theme, whether in music, literature, or the life of a fictional character or a real person.

Although usually a short melody, it can also be a chord progression or even a simple rhythm. Leitmotifs can help to bind a work together into a coherent whole, and also enable the composer to relate a story without the use of words, or to add an extra level to an already present story.

The word is usually used when talking about dramatic works, especially operas, although leitmotifs are also used in other musical genres, such as instrumental pieces, cinema, and video game music.

Does anyone know any freeware to make songs with that you can make note by note (I have only found Easy Music Composer and that can't do it like that). I know things I'd want to have for this, I can hear it in my head, but I can't actually make it on the computer, And besides the topic, I haven't been on here for months or so.
