Ok So now that I have caused the movement I ran into these glitches while playing the game:
If I go by the side of a solid and keep pressing shift and jump he will move up the wall without there being a slolid underneath
also If I jump up and hit a solid from underneath it will stick on there,is there anyway I can Solve this?

2.
CODE
if y is smaller than other.y
     move to position (self.x,other.y-8)
     set the vertical speed to 0
else
     set the vertical speed to 2

I can't understand your code your typing out commands that aren't in GML format.Wheres the Brackets?I can't put that in my collision with a solid.

I believe he IS doing it in Code. He just doesn't understand it. It shouldn't be that hard. Oh, notice. There IS a help file on the game maker. Just click the big ? Question Mark button in a blue circle on the top. It not only has a search file, it practically has EVERY piece of coding, D&D, and even a few examples! So use that.

self.x means keep the original x position. In fact, you could just leave it as "x".

other.y means place yourself at the object youare colliding with y position.

Read a tutorial/look at an engine. Trying to make one from scratch should only be done after you know exactly what you're doing.

I know alot on platforming and I do know how to do solids but I can nver pull one off with Glitch-free collisions If I got past this stage I would hardly bug for help like I have been lately

Then just look at an example really quickly, and check out the collision part only.
Common sense much....

Check a collision line (or box, whatever suits you) to your x + speed
okay try this (replace instances as necessary)
check = collision_line(x,y,x+sprite_width,y+sprite_height,obj_wall,true,true)
if check != -1 x -= speed


never tried this so I don't know if it'll work

As UltraMario stated do you guys think a mask will help? I only get these glitches wjile im pressing shift which causes faster speed

No Mask=Fail. If you don't have a Rectangle Mask, there will be problems, no matter what you do.
