Or maybe you just aren't good with it.

For me, the Wii wheel is the only thing I can use in this game. The GC controller controls are broken in this game.

I'm sure that the ranking is not based only on the time you need and positions you take.
It might also consider the falls off course, the crashes, the tricks per chance to do a trick or something etc.
Maybe getting hit by blue shells doesn't mean anything to the ranking and is just ignored.
