Mario Kart Wii isn't anything special at all, and I honestly got bored with it within a single sitting, as it really didn't offer anything new. There wasn't anything special about it at all really, and the tracks they brought back weren't even really rememberable ones. None of the music stood out, the gameplay is similar to DS, except now you can't even maintain a lead at all really, as items are so crazy now, they're the only way you stand a chance of winning, not actually clipping corners just right or using techniques just right. I can admit it is fun with friends at times, but even then it's only for so long, and it's irritating having to race with computers as well as normal players. Not only that, but the methods for unlocking characters are just ridiculous, hell, some of the characters in the game itself are ridiculous. I wasn't even hyping this game, but I was expecting something much better than what we got, as I can't recall a Mario Kart game that didn't add something interesting to it. Double Dash was perhaps my least favorite before this one had come out, but I didn't even dislike that game too much. This one is different on the other hand, as there's honestly nothing redeeming about it at all, and it makes me fear that the Mario Kart series is now heading down the trail of Mario Party.
Brawl is still perhaps one of the greatest games I've played in ages though, because while the untrained eye can detect very little being changed besides new characters and stages, it has something Melee didn't have, which is structure. Melee was an extremely broken game, characters ranging from just plain awful to just plain unfair. The reason people only used Fox was because he was so broken, it only made sense to use him. Brawl managed to perfectly balance absolutely every character, so now there's a way around anything, and while it may seem some characters have it easy, they always have some sort of weakness. The soundtrack for Brawl is also one of the greatest I've heard in a game, and while I wasn't a big fan of the character roster at first, I am happy with the choices made now. Really, the only reason I wouldn't give it a perfect score is due to the SSE being pretty boring, but the multiplayer experience is absolutely perfect to me, plus you can even build your own stages now, so there's seriously limitless fun with friends. Online play may not feature custom stages, but it boosts the replay value even more, as now you can play anyone in the world when you're bored. The game is seen as a simple game that anyone can play and effortlessly win, but the fighting system is so well structured, that while anyone can easily get into it, mastering it still takes an extensive amount of time. A game with that much depth to it is just refreshing to see, as most games that are out that people consider themselves pros at have little to no depth at all, which people enjoy, as they know what to expect and how to easily become a master at it. What really bugs me is how everyone just suddenly got out of Brawl, because no, it didn't live up to the hype everyone gave it, but it's so foolish to even hype a game as it is, as you'll of course be disappointed. I didn't hype it at first, but I did later on, as I began to see a game that looked too polished to be a bland sequel like Mario Kart Wii was to me, and I got pumped for it, and even though it didn't have everything I was hoping for, that's not a problem because it had so much I wasn't expecting, especially just how fantastic its gameplay is over any of the others.
Summary: Mario Kart Wii is nothing special at all, in fact it's perhaps the worst Mario Kart to date. Brawl has a solid gameplay engine, and while it may not have everything people had hoped for, it's foolish to be upset over that because what is there is fantastic, and I don't think it could really be made any better.
