the files themselves are fine to have. you're allowed to make yourself a backup copy of your game for personal use.
you're not allowed to share it with other people. that's illegal.

You're saying that he is completely wrong but not Completely it IS meant as a backup in-case any damage to the game carthridge is done, if he does not have a copy and downloads it, it is illegal.

Whether it is actually illegal to dump your own copy of a ROM from a cartridge you own is entirely irrelevant, because the owner of the software will not waste resources prosecuting you unless you significantly threaten their profit by publicly distributing that ROM. Ripping the sprite resources from a ROM image are a legal grey area and in the end, it depends whose sprites you are ripping. For example, Capcom has made it clear that as long as credit is given where due, they do not mind the use of their sprites in fangames. It is possible that legal technicalities will allow an unrelated legal organization to prosecute you in Capcom's name regardless of their intentions, but not enough of a threat for concern. Also, before you state "all ROM's are illegal", please remember there are also homebrew ROM's. This post has been edited by Draco Icebane on May 25 2008, 11:20 PM
