I've been thinking about trying to make a yoshi fan game for quite a while now, and I think the biggest programming obstacle will be yoshi's tongue. I have my own ideas on how I think it's programmed (using GM).

idea 1: For the tongue frames, instead of using a single animated sprite, try using separate sprites for each frame so that the collision with the tongue is more precise.

idea 2: Treat the tongue as a separate object and have the tongue check for collisions on its own. Then when the tongue comes back to yoshi, have him store the enemy in his mouth by checking for the enemy on his tongue.

Those are just the rough ideas. I'd just like to hear any other ideas anyone might have. For the record, I'm trying to use the YI sprites, and not the SMW sprites.
If there's an engine that might help with this, I'd would really like to see it.

You should have a Yoshi object and a tongue object.

Fix the tongue to a certain place, and make its collision checking pixel perfect.

When you press a certain key, run the animation and collision checking.
