QUOTE (Spritanium @ Jun 7 2008, 03:26 PM)
I'm just gonna go out on a limb here and say that just because you have autism doesn't mean that you should be excused from anything bad that you do. Say an autistic person robbed a bank. The judge isn't going to say "oshi you're autistic so you don't have to go to jail", because regardless of that fact, he's still a criminal. That kid was disrupting the rest of the class and keeping them from learning. What else would the teacher do? If the parents weren't paying enough attention to their child to know something was wrong with him, it's really their fault.

I'm sorry but did you just compare someone being disruptive in class to someone robbing a bank?

Regardless of whether he was autistic or not, the teacher could have at least told the parents he was being disruptive and this whole thing would have been avoided, but instead it turned into

OH MY GOD SHUT THE **** UP FOR ONE SECOND SO I CAN HAVE EVERY OTHER STUDENT IN HERE RIP AWAY AT YOUR SELF ESTEEM

I haven't read the entire topic, but based off of recent posts, how can anyone here blame the kid? While it was his actions that eventually brought this around, a simple parent-teacher conference and maybe some special ed could have straightened things out.

I think the teacher did tell the parents. I seriously don't think the kid had autism; I know an autistic boy; complete autistic in every mean of the word. (No, not you Cloud/Canti/pib thing) And he wasn't even that disruptive. I think the kid might have some sort of mental retardation or does it on his own free will. Apparently the kid wants attention, considering his parents didn't do anything until they kicked him out.

Umm guys, the kid's only five.

Saying he deserved a punishment such as this, which will probably scar him for life (hopefully he gets some counseling fast), is inhumane and irrational. Saying the teacher was in the right, in any way, here... I'm sorry, but there is no way in hell that you can justify the actions she took to "correct" the problem.

The kid would have learned his lesson after the first few trys if nothing was wrong with him. I'm not saying that either is right or wrong; clearly a lack of information. If you ask me, the parents did not care too much for their childs behavior, lack of punishment from them led to this.

The poor kid has AUTISM people. Do you even know what it's like to have such a disease? My sister has high functioning autism, she can't say a single word. This teacher deserves to be fired and the school deserves to be sued. I say that with 100% certainty and I want to be a DA when I grow up!

This is just horrible, the teacher was childish about the whole situation and should have talked about kicking him out of class or having a discussion with the boys parents before, or just behave like an adult in SOME way, instead of teaching her students hate and how to tell someone feelings that should have been kept inside. If the boy was normal, I could understand, hell I would have been all for it, but there's no way the teacher could have known that at the time, and shouldn't have made assumptions that the boy had the opportunity to communicate with other students normally and assessing the issues with his behavior.

I hope the teacher loses her teaching license forever and the school gets sued majorly, this poor child will have to live through life thinking people hate him for having a disease he never chose to live with, and one of the earliest memories he'll have will be his many peers telling him how much of a terrible person he is, when really he is just one who doesn't know how to communicate on their level.

And I know a bunch of people will say "HAH! Serves that boy right! He should have known better!". You can just shut up. If he were normal, I would totally understand your position, but this child cannot help to bet he person he is and does not deserve this kind of torture. I have been around autistic kids my whole life and they undergo many hardships every day. They don't need their whole class and their TEACHER, an ADULT FIGURE, to remind them how different they are.

ADHD is bull**** created by pharmecuitcal companies to sell a drug you don't need. I was diagnosed with ADHD and they put me on pills. I decided to stop taking them for ****s and giggles and guess what? NO CHANGE IN BEHAVIOR. Don't even try to compare ADHD to autism.

To Saberie: Umm I'm pretty sure the parents weren't aware that their child had autism and I doubt it's because they neglected their child. If you had a kid acting up in school, the last thing you'd expect is that your child has autism, for you'd expect the behavior as it is normal for children to act up. You carry out your measure of discipline, whatever that may be, and move on.

The psychological abuse (from the teacher) apparently started long before the Survivor vote, since the parents said they noticed their child's decreasing desire to go to school, and a change in general behavior. There isn't any way to tell for sure what happened before this event, though.

ADHD isn't fake. I've been diagnosed with ADHD and anxiety since I was eight; it's been eight years and I act like a complete maniac without my medication. I know it doesn't compare **** to autism, but it is real.

Okay, I went a bit extreme because I was pissed at the kid for trying to compare it to autism. I guess it does it exist, but it is WAY TOO misdiagnosed these days.

Because there are different forms of autism, and the kid is not only just five and wouldn't know much better, but he was constantly harassed at school as it is.

They were trying to scar the kid into behaving in the first place.

Besides, it makes as much sense to "punish the entire class for ____'s actions"

And also,

I'm still waiting for the people who say, "BUT HE WAS AUTISTIC, IT WASN'T HIS FAULT!" to realize that they didn't know that until after the event described.

Even if he was a genius and was doing this by his own actions and knew it was completely wrong of him to do so; the teacher should have done something else. I remember in my old school the people who disrupted the class too often had to sit outside of the classroom, that way, he'd be getting punished and wouldn't be disrupting the class.
