Now before anyone says it, yes. Tiers are for queers is pretty true since everyone is so balanced this time around that really it is anyone's game, it just depends on strategy. Adding everything together though, who would most likely be some of the better characters within the game? The SmashBoards have this discussion going, but they're not applying anything they've learned outside of the VERY few numbers of tournaments they've based their tiers off of, and not only that, they are extremely picky with their selections, using really lame reasons as to why certain characters are positioned in such ways. All things considered, who would most likely be listed off as the best characters potentially, to the worst?
Here is what I have gathered from my experiences:
* Just because there are different sections does not mean these tiers are close by any means, as any character can beat any other character with the right play style.
----TOP TIER----
Meta Knight - (While he has some weaknesses and not being that strong, his moves all have great range and are really quick, and have a lot of shoving power.)
Mr. Game and Watch - (He was really improved upon this time, and can shield out of most moves instantly. He's kind of light though, but the power of his moves make up for that.)
Snake - (While he is made out to be a god, he really isn't, as his dash is useless and can have moves backfire easily.)
Marth - (Speedy, strong, and can counter attacks. Also has more moves than other characters due to his side B.)
Falco - (Not only is he quick, he has much better moves for combos than Fox does, and is very easy to control.)
R.O.B. - (Great range, strong moves, and one of the best recoveries in the whole game.)
----High Tier----
Lucario - (Argued to be much lower due to his weight and the speed of some attacks, his strength, which can improve just from dying or getting hurt, is fantastic. His range is amazing too, and he has some pretty quick moves.)
Pikachu - (VERY fast, combos well, just a little bit too light.)
Ice Climbers - (Chain throws, really strong moves when together, multiple ways to recover, they're only bad when one dies.)
Olimar - (He's a dream choice for those who love to turtle, as all of his moves have great range and are very powerful. He has very little to use in the air though, and has an awful recovery.)
Jigglypuff - (ALWAYS made out to be one of the worst due to her weight and not being as good as in Melee, she not only has a large number of moves that can kill easily on the ground, but her air game is FANTASTIC. While rest isn't as useful, rollout has been improved upon much more, and she arguably has more potential than she did in Melee.)
Wolf - (While not as fast as Fox or Falco, his attacks are all pretty strong, and a few are not only good for surprising people with, but can kill them if they hit just right.)
King Dedede - (Usually listed off higher due to his chain throws, but not only do they not work on smaller characters, his large size and long attack animations sometimes give him a disadvantage. Still a very good selection if used correctly.)
Pit - (While he's quick and has a lot of good moves that are easy to hit with, he's not that great at adding up damage, but is still pretty good. He's kind of light as well, but his recovery move makes up for that.)
Yoshi - (Another character usually made out to be on the bottom, who shouldn't have been ignored. He has some of the best moves for comboing perhaps in the entire game, and has invincibility frames on his second jump, preventing people from stopping him from recovering.)
Diddy Kong - (Moves quickly, somewhat fast attacks, and can be very annoying to play against if used just right.)
Zelda - (MUCH improved over Melee, her attacks are all ridiculously powered now, each of them being good for adding up damage or killing people.)
----Medium Tier----
Kirby - (Better than he was in Melee, but still lacking in some ways. While pretty powerful, some of his attacks are slow and leave him wide open, plus he's kind of light. Not the best air game going either.)
Donkey Kong - (Usually he's put much higher up just because he can counter all of the top tier characters, which is usually just Snake and Meta Knight. He finally is good in a Smash game, his attacks now able to hit, and pack a lot of power into them. Very heavy too, so he isn't easy to kill. Attacks are slow though, so you can get around them and hit him a few times.)
Lucas - (Faster than Ness, and some moves having much more potential for adding up damage and killing, he still has that lacking recovery that both he and Ness share, making it hard to survive for too long, considering he is pretty light.)
Luigi - (Some of his moves are speedier than Mario's, or cover more range and can add up potentially more damage. His up+B can murder people if it connects, although it leaves him wide open afterwards, as well as some of his other moves.)
Fox - (No longer so great, Fox is still as difficult as ever to control, but doesn't reward those by much, now lacking some of his signature methods of adding up damage and killing in Melee. Still not a bad choice, but he isn't too difficult to hit around.)
Toon Link - (With great speed, and some attacks that hit pretty hard, as well as many projectiles for new players to spam with delight, his moves are easy to detect and counter.)
Ike - (While he's an overall slow character, his moves are not only greatly powered, they can actually be timed pretty well so they actually connect. He still leaves himself wide open though, but with two recovery moves and a heavy weight, he isn't too easy to get rid of.)
Wario - (He just seems like a joke character at first, but he isn't too bad. His forward smash is great for killing as it has invincibility frames, and he has three potential ways to recover. Sadly though, he's pretty easy to predict most of the time.)
Peach - (Also argued with Yoshi and Jigglypuff to be around the bottom, Peach isn't bad at all. With some very good air moves, being able to hover for a few seconds, and do some pretty good combos, she isn't a bad choice. She doesn't have too many moves to kill with, and she is open with whichever moves of hers actually kill.)
Mario - (While he was right in the middle in Melee with good moves overall, Mario has been slowed down a bit too much, although he certainly still isn't too bad, all of his moves doing a fair amount of damage.)
Zero Suit Samus
Squirtle - (The fastest out of any of Pokemon Trainer's three Pokemon, he's not too bad. He has some quick moves that do a fair amount of damage, as well as two ways to recover. He's very light, and some of his attacks last too long, making him wide open.)
----Low Tier----
Ness - (While Lucas has speed, Ness has power, and some of his moves can be brutal if they connect. The main problem with Ness? His recovery takes longer to not only use, but someone can just jump in front of it to prevent him from even trying to use it. His attacks are also slower, making him easier to hit around.)
Captain Falcon - (Always argued as being one of the worst, if not, THE worst character, people need to open their eyes a little more. Falcon isn't perfect, but he isn't bad this time around. His skills mostly will shine on the edge of the stage, has he has many counter methods to those hanging out there, most of his moves being perfect to spike people with. He's very tricky to control though, and while he has plenty of potential, one wrong move can mean certain death.)
Bowser - (Bowser is actually useful for something now, as his attacks can't be interrupted so easily anymore. He's still pretty slow though, and huge, meaning you can counter most of his moves easily. Still, he does offer many good moves and strategies, and can face off with a lot of characters decently, due to his incredible power.)
Charizard - (The heaviest out of any of Pokemon Trainer's three Pokemon, he's not really that great. His moves certainly do a lot of damage and can kill people easily, but they're pretty easy to interrupt, much easier than most of the other heavy characters. He can recover easily at least, which he'll probably be attempting a lot, since it's not hard to dodge and counter him.)
Shiek - (Once one of the most vicious characters, it seems she and Zelda had a little switch for Brawl. While she has speed on the ground and some decent moves for poking people with from a distance, she isn't too powerful. Not only that, she's very easy to hit, even when she is doing an attack.)
Ivysaur - (Ivysaur does have a great anti-air move, perfect for those characters that a lot others can't even face, but he is lacking in most other places. His moves are all pretty strong, but most are slow. He does have good range, but another problem is that not only does he have a bad air game, he can't really recover.)
----Bottom Tier----
Sonic - (Sonic isn't awful, but he isn't that great. While really fast and can add up damage to those that stay on the ground, he has somewhat of a problem with those that hang in the air, and it's pretty difficult to kill people with him, as you need proper timing for most of his moves to actually kill.)
Samus - (Lets face it, Samus isn't as good as she used to be in the last two games. One of the better characters hasn't really been improved on, but has rather been broken down a lot more. While she isn't that bad, her lack of speed, weakened projectiles, and her very short reaching recovery move at hand, she isn't that hot of a selection this time around.)
Link - (Link has never really been a good selection in any of the Smash Bros. games. The benefit to link over Toon Link is his boomerang being able to fling people around, but that's really all he has going. He is much slower and will have a much harder time than Toon Link will.)
Ganondorf - (While he is on the bottom here, he isn't plain AWFUL. His moves are all perhaps some of the strongest in the game, but lacking at least one quick move and having the slowest speed out of almost anyone, it's truly difficult to do too well as him.)
