okay, say you're a chemist. let's even say you spent four years in college studying hard to get a degree so you could practice chemistry, because you're very interested in that field.

in this hypothetical world, let's say people aren't generally well-informed on the meaning of the word "chemistry." but then a few police raids happen on some drug houses, and they arrest the people making and distributing illegal narcotics. the news coverage says "three chemists arrested in drug raid" and the like. **** like this happens a lot over time, without any real *good* news about chemists besides those who make illegal drugs making mass media attention.

now you, a chemist who's really dedicated to chemistry, go and tell someone you've just met that you're a chemist. the person backs away from you, saying "you're a chemist? you must be a bad person, pushing drugs out on the streets! you make me sick!"
but you don't do that, you're interested in honest, legitimate chemistry, not making drugs. you try to explain the situation to some people, who say things like "well I heard in the news that chemists are bad people" or "chemistry is illegal!"

wouldn't you be offended?
