you can put home brew on it, and it comes with Moonshell on it, which is a multi-media player

(for clarity: this is true of both R4 and M3 "Real")

personally I've been recommending the CycloDS Evolution
though if you just want something simple the R4 is decent for its price.

Eh I already ordered an R4 myself, hasn't come in yet, but from what I've been reading you can put on videos and change themes, other then that i dunno, but I haven't played ALOT of the DS library as is, so this is worth it enough for me. What good homebrew for DS am I missin' Lightning? :V

I think you should get a SLOT-2 device so that you can run GBA homebrew software as well as SLOT-1 software. You need a FlashMe or FWNITRO or a NoPass device (DS Action Replay is a valid NoPass device) to run Nintendo DS software from SLOT-2.

to be honest I think a slot-1 device is a lot easier to deal with in this day and age where most interesting homebrew is on the DS rather than the GBA anyway

rather than getting a passthrough device, flashing the firmware (which not everyone is comfortable with), etc.
it just . works without any real hassle

but yeah there's plenty of cool homebrew like IRC, AIM, and MSN clients, basic web browser, Linux, music-makin' stuff, drawing programs, emulators (including TI-83+, GBC, NES, Genesis, some SNES, SMS/GG, ScummVM, etc.)
