So I'm putting together several pieces now, and I believe my next goal is to lay a foundation of good animation and physics. I want the physics in my game to be just like, or as close as possible to Super Mario Sunshine's.
As it is my first attempt at creating character animation and physics, I don't know how I should go about it. Is there some way I can analyze the game itself, or is it relatively easy to copy the game without doing so?

It depends on your own ability to code these physics. If you're a novice, then don't even bother.

I am a novice, but by no means am I incapable.

The engine I'm working with already has a physics system, but I need to edit it to match an actual Mario game.

Seriously, if you're a novice, you need some more skill before you take on something like this.

The only thing I can think of is to play it and compare them.

Anybody can make anything regardless of their skill

It'll just take longer for some people than others

My best advice would be to familiarize yourself with the original game's physics, then tinker with your game's physics until it feels just right

Also, don't be afraid to make mistakes, that's what makes programming fun

How does this help with your character animation, though?

Animation is creating images that change at such a pace, it makes the object appear like it's moving, is it not?

@Im4EverCool and Razz: So it sounds like experimentation is the way to go then? Sounds good enough. xD
Now to actually get the game engine. ^^;

@Soiyeruda: Yes, and combining that with the game's physics would give actual motion. That combination is what I'm trying to learn.
