I do that, and it works, but I hate having to rearrange my desktop all over again. It didn't do this before, and I want to know how to fix this. NOTE: No, I'm not using huge backgrounds...in fact, I was testing a game with only two sprites!! You're probably going to just have toget a new graphics card.
What id the resolution at wich it prompts an error?

Well, I can't do that unless it's under 50$ and it can actually improve my graphics (as in, I don't want to spend my money on something that I can only use to test Gamemaker games and not play games with good graphics, e.g Stronghold 2). The resolution I'm using is 1280 by 1024.

you can usually get mid-range (at least a year or two ago, anyway) cards like a radeon 3650 or a geforce 8600 for around $60-$80

or you could even go lower but that depends on if you want to take the risk
