maybe you ended up in CYMK mode instead of RGB mode somehow
kinda hard to tell without screenshots

it almost looks like your display's color depth is set too low or something but that could just be the GIF

i dunno, i had something like this happen once to painter but i can't remember how i fixed it
alternatively you could use artweaver, since it's basically the freeware equivalent of painter
