DEADLINE: SUNDAY 27 of July 2008 By this date we want to have: - 15 levels - 10 reasonably different powerups (making a bat big and small would be different enough to count as two) - 1 boss in the last level (optional though!)
If that goal is NOT reached, then there will NOT be another CFP. I hope this is clear: You have a bit more than one week of time to "finish" this breakout game with the above requirements. If this goal is not reached by the 27th at midnight, the breakout game will be quit and we will not start another CFP. At least not until next year.
Good luck everyone! We really want to see you make it.
| QUOTE (HIGH PRIORITY: HAS TO BE DONE) | - Spriters: Create sprites for the powerup-bricks that are already in the engine. - Engineers: Go to page 15 and make Pikaboo's powerups! - Engineers: Create new bricks and take advantage of the prn_catchable. - Spriters: follow xn--e5x's instructions (page 12) and create sprite fonts matching to the HUD-backgrounds that you made. - Engineers: In obj_gameplay, make it so the thing draws the score and the lives on the left side of the playfield. You already have the HUD backgrounds, so you know where and how you should draw them. - Spriters: Take bg_frame from the engine (or just from the screen below) and create a nice frame on the base of that.

| QUOTE (THE NEWS BOARD) | NEWS - June 18, 08: Now that we have a deadline, things seem to go on faster. Keep up the good work. - June 30, 08: The CFP seems to come along. The Hi Priority List has its first point crossed out because it was done successfully. Go on like this, fellow MFGGers! - June 28, 08: Engine updated to version 0-1-5. You can now program score and catchable objects for the bat. - June 27, 08: Engine updated to version 0-1-0. It should now be compatible with GM6. - June 27, 08: The engine is not compatible with GM6, so it is down for now. It'll be back soon! - June 27, 08: The engine is up. Don't mess it up.

Here we go! WHOEVER WANTS TO TAKE PART: PLEASE STICK TO THE RULES POSTED IN THIS POST Everything said in this post is the rules you have to stick to. If you can't obey these simple rules, you will not be able to do a community fangame project.[dohtml]<a href="#Rules">Go to the RULES</a>[/dohtml] But, first things first.Black Squirrel, our favourite Admin, was sceptical about the CFP from the beginning. In his opinion, You [the members of MFGG] are not good enough to make anything together. This is also the reason why BS did NOT give us a seperate board for the new CFP. YET! So this is your chance: In this little warm-up, we will start with something very simple so You [the members] get used to TEAMWORK and OBEYING RULES of the organisation. The organisation so far consists of the following members:- Guinea (main organizer) - Tri (assistant organizer) - Dex (assistant organizer, specifically for the spriting business) Please do NOT ask if you can be part of the organisation. If we think you are worthy, you will get on board, if we don't, don't bother us.If you proove yourself to be a mature member in this Warm-Up, you have a higher chance of being promoted to organisation member for the real thing! Not promising anything, though. So what is this warm-up you should do to convince your admin that YOU are worth getting your own board to make a Community Fangame Project?Simply put, it is this: Yes, you've seen it right. Breakout. Breakout is one of the simpliest game that exist. And I chose it because it is very extendable. You can create dozens of different bricks with different conditions, hitpoints, you can put power-ups in them and also power-downs. You can do awesome graphical effects and whatnot. Shortly put: We will take this breakout engine that I programmed solely for the purpose of this CFP Warm-Up and make the best breakout game out of it that MFGG has ever seen. Or at least we make it good enough so BS will have to admit that You [the members] are not a bunch of jerks who are here just for the CCC, but that you are a bunch of jerks who can actually work together as a team.I might again point out something: Do not complain that we will do this first. If you guys fail to do this, you will also fail to make something more complicated. This Warm-Up will probably last not longer than 2 weeks, so don't worry, we'll get started on the real CFP soon enough. The basic idea behind this is to see what you can do with a premade engine that requires not much more than coding very simple stuff to create a vast variety of different objects and gameplay elements. Of course, if you don't use Game Maker 6.1 or 7, you can still help by providing sprites for all kinds of things. - Bricks, also in cracked form (for the case that they have several hitpoints). - Balls (so you could see what power-up/down the ball currently has just by its sprite) - Bats (Maybe for style purposes, maybe for purposes of power-ups/downs.) - Special Effects - Power-Up objects that fall down from bricks so you can collect them with your bat. - and of course the HUD (you see the black border around the playfield? That's actually one background. One can take this background and give it a little better design that also allows for the drawing of score, lives and other information on the left side) So you see, spriters have a lot to do in thisAlso for the sound persons. You can look for awesome sound effects and music to put behind the levels to create a thrilling athmosphere. Yes, sound specialists do stuff too!And last but not least, you can contribute by just designing different levels for the game! More details on how the engine makers and level designers will work will follow as soon as I upload the engine to this first postResource Makers, you can start making ressources now!In the screen you see above, you see all the graphics that exist to this point, so nothing holds you to sprite in a similar style. OR You could also sprite a totally different set of sprites, who knows if we need that? As for the sound people, you know how breakout has to sound like, so bring on sounds. Also discuss ideas for elements you want to see in the game and I will see to optimize the engine for that purpose, so YOU can actually create the new elements with very little effort (other than obeying to the RULES I will post together with the engine).Good luck with this, and may you be able to convince the Squirrel that you're capable of something as simple as breakout.THEN we will get to start on the real CFP#2. | QUOTE (Rules) | [dohtml]<a name="Rules">The RULES</a>[/dohtml] Rules for Everyone
IF YOU DO NOT UNDERSTAND ANYTHING, THEN PLEASE ASK. DO NOT INTERPRETE THINGS WRONGLY IF YOU ARE NOT SURE WHAT THEY MEAN!
- You will find the News Board at the top of this post. Whatever is mentioned in this section, will be the most important for you, so don't miss checking it regularly. - This STICKY is the only topic needed for the CFP Warm-Up, so do not post any other topics in the FGD. The purpose of this is to have everything oranized and to avoid confusion. (not everyone reads all topics and some could take other topics for facts etc.) - Any posts that are not relevant to the CFP Warm-Up will be deleted. (That includes posts concerning the actual CFP, unless they are connected to the CFP Warm-Up significantly). - This is basically your very last chance. If you fail, you will never ever again see a CFP. So don't screw up on this one. Everyone is with you, BS would probably the most of all like to see you succeed in this, so don't disappoint us.
Spriters - If you want to make a sprite, post a list of the things you want to sprite to reserve them for yourself. (In this topic) - If we don't hear anything from you within a certain amount of time (let's say one hour per sprite you claimed to make), then your claim will be invalid and another member will be allowed to make the sprite instead of you. Everyone can see the date a post was posted, so you can act freely. No permission from the organisation needed if you see clearly that this rule is in effect. - Try to sprite in the style that Dex started (as seen in the screenshot) or create a whole new set so we can create differently themed levels. It depends on you how various the levels will be. - When your sprite is finished, post them in the same post in which you claimed and use the [ s][ /s] tags on your claim so we know that the sprites are done. - Use PNG or GIF format.
Sound People - Try to find some good sound effects that would work well with a Breakout game. - Try to find music (preferably in midi-format for file-size reasons) that adds a nice feeling to the game. - You do not have to claim things for yourself, unless you want to create your OWN effects and music. If this is in effect, the very same rules as for the spriters apply to you.
Engine Makers - You will need GM 6.1 or GM 7 (Lite) - You will need Lateral GM if you have no GM 6.1 but only GM7. I will post a link to it later. Instructions: - Download the latest version of the engine. - POST that YOU have the engine right now, otherwise somebody else could modify the engine in the same moment and we would have two different versions. - If you don't post about the engine's status while you have it, your "license" will expire after 12 hours and somebody else can claim the engine for the next edit. - DO NOT CHANGE anything in the existing code (yet). It is not yet ready for this. - If you want to add stuff, do so, but follow the instructions in the creation event of the parent objects. - When you edit anything in the gm6, make sure that you have a gm6 again (Lateral GM for those who have GM7 only). - Make sure you post and document EVERY SINGLE CHANGE you did to avoid unfindable bugs and glitches. - Attach the new gm6 to your post just like I did. - Add 1 to the last number of the version number in the file name. (e.g. if the old version was 0-0-0, you'd put 0-0-1, then 0-0-2 etc.) Do not change the first two numbers! - If anything is unclear: ASK. Do not randomly interprete things. ASK.
Level Designers - See above (^Engine Makers). The same rules apply to you for requesting the engine. To create a new level, do as follows: - Create a new room. - Set room size to 320x240. - Set Background #2 to "bg_frame". - Place an object "obj_gameplay" in the top-left corner. - Place an object "obj_bat" above the ground in the same position as seen in the first level. - Place bricks. - In the creation code of the room, write "// Made by: [insert your name here]". - Submit. NOTE: You don't have to create the border of the playfield as the obj_gameplay DOES THAT byitelf when the room starts.
The engine is attached to this post.

I'm working on some background music. Partly done, here are some previews: "Easy" (updated) "Marioland" (updated) "Perc"I want some feedback before I continue working on 'em. Are they what you had in mind, should they be more melodious, less melodious, faster, slower, whatever. I also want to have a try at some special effects (e.g. ball-hits-object particles). Still not clear on exactly what sprite effects this engine will support, so I'm going to assume nothing until I hear otherwise. ...the sprites i posted here were a bit rubbish; instead I'm going to wait until the engine writers agree on which power-ups to implement and then draw effects specifically for those items.
