In IE, hovering your cursor over an image would display an alt. tag, shown in a small, yellow text box.

Is there anyway to get Firefox to do this?

It's for specific images.

Scroll over some of these.

there might be a plugin

firefox uses 'title' as opposed to 'alt' for alt text, and afaik the latter is more common even though it's technically wrong

ALT is the incorrect use of tooltips. If you use title, IE will display that instead of the alt value. Alt is intended for alternative display when images cannot be rendered. Both attributes should be used.

yeah the behavior where the alt="text" is shown in a tooltip rather than the title="text" is non-standard and, like lots of things when it comes to IE behavior, wrong

there was an extension for firefox I remember seeing which emulates this behavior, but I seriously recommend against using it. instead, contact the web master of the site that's mis-using the "alt" tag and tell him to start using the "title" tag in accordance with standard HTML.

i usually agree but the problem is that a webmaster isn't going to give two ****s about such a minor infraction

now if you cannot view his site because he is using iframes or internet explorer specific style declarations or some other horrendous error then you may have a reason to bother him

well even so, the minor nature of the error means it's relatively simple to fix (if it's consistently wrong, s/alt=/title=/g would fix it straight away) and depending on who it is, the author might appreciate and learn from your correction

sigh... in a perfect world, anyway
