Trying to construct a new computer, and I want to know if a Quad core processor is worth it, or if I should just get a dual core.

if you're planning on using software that can use all four cores

i'd get one if the "twin" dual-core (like the E6600 is to the Q6600) wasn't much cheaper

just don't expect a 100% speed increase over dual-core, much as you shouldn't expect a 100% from a transition from single to dual

Won't it be more like a 50% increase or something

I dunno, it depends on whether the processors are actually both / all active at once or not, right

I dunno, it depends on whether the processors are actually both / all active at once or not, right

and on how well the programs are threaded

but yeah 50% is a reasonable expectation

The q6600 is at a cheap price and definitly beats the core 2 duo's. More and more applications like photoshop work much better with a quad because it's supported, the most recent games also have this. And internet itself will also benefit it, so yeah go for it, don't worry about the few things that don't work better with a quad core.

tip q9450 is not worth it due to the price being 100 euro's more and just a little better than the q6600
