...no, dont get drunk. Wine is a program that lets you run Windows programs on Linux.

hardly. there are other virtualization programs such as VirtualBox, QEMU, etc. that are not bulky and proprietary (VMware is)
if his target platform is windows 98, why have it run windows xp?
and of course, you're assuming that his computer is powerful enough to virtualize without a significant performance hit.

WINE should work. But, if it's DOS, you might want to find a Free, installable version of DOS, like FreeDOS.

and when I say "VMware" I am including VirtualBox, QEMU and stuff...
