QUOTE (Black Squirrel @ Jul 5 2008, 11:58 AM)
GM is obviously more powerful because the kids who searched "GAME MAKER" in google for a game making program found it, used it, and now represent a majority at MFGG. And the majority is obviously more powerful than a minority.

On a techincal level it is not, however.

Sure, MMF can be easier, but Game Maker has more possibilities, like a programming language. IMO, Game Maker is the best out of the 2.

Well, this is panning out without any flames, just expression of opinions. Nice; hope it lasts.

Naw, a few people are surpassing opinions here and just guessing about the other product cuz they've never used it and don't wanna bother, which isn't a surprise I guess, since one is free and the other isn't, although I don't know a single soul who BOUGHT MMF2!

Clickteam. But only because it's the only one I've ever used.

I wish they were cheaper.

well back in the day, the trial version for multimedia fusion and games factory never expired.(im not joking, i swear I had MMF 1.5 and TGF on my computer for 2 years, and they were kept working../)

I don't really have an opinion though. I havent ever touched game marker because I was happy with the results from clickteam products.

and of course, you should know any software is free on the Internet.

It is always best to find the program you are most comfortable with.Doing so you may get very good results from finding that program.It may not hurt to pay a little extra.

I prefer game maker simply because I've never used a clickteam product; and I'm sure the same goes for almost every gm user who posted.

Neither. C is better.

okay, in all seriousness.
Only reason I say GM is because of it's programming language.

You never used it and I can tell just from that comment, haha. I dunno guys, don't even make a decision here if you've never really fully experienced the other side. It seems so silly. It's going from which do you feel is better to which is most used.

This is getting to be a serious problem. I really feel that this topic should be about expressing opinions on GM or Clickteam products, not bashing opinions that aren't yours. Sure, there are plenty of excuses to back you up, and I at least respect that you are using actual reasons, but can we please just learn to tolerate each other's opinions?

I have a bit of a question.

Can anyone explain why just having a programming language makes something automatically better than having a more visual layout like MMF2? Sure, one of them may have more features than the other, but if I had a choice between a programming language or a visual layout if they both offered me exactly the same features and stuff, I'd pick the visual layout for simple ease of use.

Am I wrong?

It would be inaccurate to say you're wrong.I agree with that statement although in GM you don't need to program in code you just can do more stuff.

After reading this topic, I am depressed to see that I am no longer the champion of ignorance and dodging points. Great going you idiots, you're worse at arguing than Draco is. I hope you're proud of yourselves.

This does not apply to Delmore, who somehow manages to be the most logical person in the thread.

So here's a non-biased comparison of both products. Draw your own conclusion.

MMF2:
* Extremely user-friendly interface
* Few technical terms / no strict syntax
* Visual layout of coding to help keep track
* Behavior system
* Supports extensions -- with a special extension kit no less -- including a LUA scripting language extension, theoretically unlimited
* Text Blitter, enough said
- Default movements are ass
- Relies heavily on sprites (can be bypassed easily)
- Not friendly to spritesheets
- Costs too much unless you're a pirate

GameMaker:
* Free - registration is for eye candy and extensions
* Can use drag-and-drop for simpler games
* Has own scripting language with built-in documentation and syntax highlighting
* Registered version supports *.dll extensions, theoretically unlimited
* Behavior system
- Horrible room editor interface
- Relies far too heavily on sprites in the code (can be bypassed similarly to MMF2's method)
- Most relatively advanced gameplay features must be coded from scratch
- Uses its own technical jargon, often contrasts with other languages
- Runs awfully or not at all on certain computers compared to MMF2

QUOTE (Guinea @ Jul 6 2008, 03:19 AM)
I have never used a Clickteam product, but from what I hear it doesn't sound very tasty to me. You need to get a crapload of extensions to create a semi-decent game and so on.

Speaking from experience, whoever told you that is wrong. Fun fact: Toad Strikes Back uses barely any extensions at all. =D
Just the save game object. And the background system box (for parallax), but I forget whether that is an extension or included with MMF 1.5, honestly. Heh. Not to brag or anything, but many seem to agree that TSB is a little more than "semi decent." ;P

The event editor may seem limited at first to coders, but once you learn how to exploit all the tricks within, you'd be surprised at what you can do, and without extensions to boot.

More specifically; it may look "complex" for first time users in terms of Event Editor procedure, but with enough practice one should be able to get used to it within a matter of weeks. tongue.gif

My approach is usually to be sure that you have the main game engine finalized via the Events List (thank goodness for test levels). Then COPY the "test level", make modifications to do a REAL level, then go in the Event Editor again to make and changes/additions to it.

Too easy. But time is still the biggest enemy.
