(This is a random survey and it no way, affects what I prioritize in my games)

What would you consider a priority.

I'd have to say everything should be treated equally.

Here's why:

Story: If you don't have a decent story, then where does your game start and end? (Excluding mini-games)

Artwork: If your game looks ugly/unpresentable, then that will lead people to go play something else.

Music: You certainly don't want repetitive music that does'nt fit in with the level. That will keep people away.

Game Play: You want good control, with a good difficulty. Everything should be (near) flawless.

Extras: You would like people to play your game over and over, right? Wouldn't want a one-time play game biggrin.gif

Everything should be equal, hands down! wink.gif

But I do agree on one thing -- if you don't have an "objective" in place, you really don't have a game. sad.gif Of course, if the game has a story, it adds to that objective.

Gameplay, hands down

it's what the old games have plenty of, and what the new games don't have enough of

The story's actually entirely irrelevant. There have been plenty of good games that have pretty much no storyline at all. In technicality, older video games such as Super Mario Bros. didn't give you the least of story in the game itself, only in the manual, making it innately optional.

As much as I appreciate good graphics, there are many games I like quite a bit that look terrible -- for instance, in Graffiti Kingdom, you can draw your own monsters, which generally means that they look horrifying. On the other hand, drawing your own monsters is amazing. The game's existing monster database doesn't look so bad in the lategame either.

Music however cannot be ignored since it is constantly there, and for this I consider it far more important than the actual graphical quality.

True.

But normally, people judge book by their covers. I'm one of those awful people, sadly. If the game looks ugly/stupid just from looking at the Game Box and the writing on the back, fewer people will want to buy it.

Lets take a random example most of you won't know.

Gotcha Force. Capcom

To most people, it looked like a kiddy game just from looking at the box art, and the back. Everything was too cartoony, and fewer people decided to not buy it. I actually bought this game, and it turned out to be kinda fun. The gameplay was good, and there weren't any glitches (except for a very major one that everyone uses to their advantage, but many never figured it out :P).

A tie between Story and Gameplay.
Example: Oot had a better story line but TP had better gameplay, so I can't decide which I like better.

I'd say everything should be equal but what I don't see often in fangames is a heavy story and one would be nice.I voted sound/music to encourage people to use more sound effects and/or not use commonly used music.

As far as fangames go, I probably want to see a bit more of a story-line. Since so many fangames have similar mario gameplay style, the only thing to distinct it from each other is maybe graphics/engine, which isn't much to go off of. therefore, they get boring fast, since I've played mario platformers about 100 times.(and so has everyone else)

so..

I say all equal/originality/creativity

I like that statement. The majority games on mainsite is probably platform although some platform games seem more enjoyable than others but i think its that some posess what others don't or are simply excecuted "better".I think Mario quest 2 had a great story if not the most dialogue.

Everything is important, but gameplay always gets a higher priority from me.

Graphics/Sounds should just not hurt your eyes/ears.

Story should only be good if the game is story driven. Super Mario Bros. lived well without a story, so did Tetris. You can't tell me that SMB or Tetris are bad games because the storyline sucked.
However in a game like Zelda or any other RPG or Adventure game, the story is essential and therefore part of the genre and the gameplay.
Bottom line: if the genre requires the story, the story is important.

Extras are always nice, but I remember my first game which was loaded with "extras" but had no good gameplay, no good ressources and no good story, so I guess that Extras don't make a game good out of nowhere.
A game without extras can be boring after the first time, but the first time you won't bother with the extras.

And all this makes gameplay win for me.

Once again -- "intro" discussion coming from me, but I still have to say -- even though our "attempts" pale in comparison to official ones, if it IS possible to make one depending on the game, do it -- whether it's story related or not. tongue.gif Personally, I like those "show what the game is all about, then 'invite' the players to join in on the challenge" type intros before we get to the title screen/menus, but that's just me. tongue.gif

Not that it's very important, but it adds to the experience. laugh3.gif
