I think they did it primarily to have a larger player count for their roleplaying game, to have it more exciting or something.

You have to admit. There were like eight characters in SSB64. An eight-person RP is pretty boring if there's no furry sex.

So was Birdo, but of course, they got that wrong.

Therefore, maybe it is a girl. It'd be nice since there weren't any girl fighters in that game anyway.
