Medaf Needs Your Help!

Hey, MFGG. Medaf called me last night telling me his computer wasn't working now. For the past few days, it's been acting up very strangely. Here's the symptoms: it'll shut down sometimes inexplicably, and when it boots up, there is only a black screen with a white tick at the top as if it is prompting you to type something.

Earlier, he was able to bypass this screen by repetitively hitting F8 to make a menu screen appear. He used the menu screen to return him to his Windows Vista desktop. However, it appears that has ceased to work.

Help, MFGG?

This belongs in the Help! forum. Maybe Lightning or some other computer expert will know the answer.

Happened to me. Ended up being a screwed up mother board.

That's what Medaf's mum has been saying, but he keeps telling me he's not to fond of the notion of strange people being in his house working on his computer.

That may be the only thing he can do though...

Oh? I read something about that online, actually when I was trying to help him.

Pardon me for not being so informed, but do you know how you would go about fixing such a problem?

A Black screen with a text marker? Sounds like some hidden file or exe. , dll. was deleted. Yeah, bringing it in is your best option.

anyway: how old is the computer, how long has windows been installed on it, does the empty text screen appear before or after the BIOS (usually the manufacturer's logo, etc. shows for a few seconds)
if you're able to, try to get into the BIOS settings and check for a power-on self-test (POST) option, see if it can find anything wrong with its hardware.
if all the hardware seems fine, is it able to boot an operating system from CD or USB?



and I cannot stress this enough: geek squad is a scam. don't get involved.

The computer is less than a year old, as far as I know. It has Windows XP and Vista on it, I believe. I believe Windows has been installed on it for the same amount of time -- a little less than a year. The black screen appears before the BIOS. We can't get to that screen; the black screen comes up, and then we can't seems to get anything else to work, much less do anything. We're getting one of Medaf's friends (the one that gave him the computer) to loan him the OS CD, and we're going to try fixing it from that. I'll keep the thread updated on what happens from there, and hopefully, if all goes well, I won't have to be the one saying the results were positive.

Yeah, so I've heard. Medaf's mum isn't the brightest crayon in the box when it comes to computers though, so she's easily persuaded by silly media scams like that. I mean, if it has "geek" in the name, they must be legit, right? Especially since they have a ct achy name and come from a mainstream company like Best Buy. Medaf suspects it's her fault in the first place for messing his computer up, since she has a bad habit of not just opening her email when she goes on the computer. She spends alot of time opening spam and clicking on advertisements that say "YOU HAV 2 NEW MESSAGES CLIK NOW OR ULL NEVAR GET THEM!!!!!!"

Yeah. So you can't really get mad at someone that naive. She said if Geek Squad had come out, it would've run them, like, $300. Which is totally bogus.
