| QUOTE (Black Squirrel @ Jul 17 2008, 12:31 PM) | Looks nifty. Here's hoping they do a Parodius one too, because as great as Gradius is, I always thought it was a bit dull (well of the ones I've played which is everything before and including Gradius III).
As soon as you die in Gradius I and III you stand no chance in getting any decent powerups unless you're reasonably good at the genre, which sad to say, I'm not. Gradius II's alright though. |
Parodius is already technically back, as Otomedius. Actually, it's an acquired skill. Eventually you get good at it. "Being good at the genre" will not help you.

Giving this a hefty bump because I just got this game(installed the WAD via homebrew), and I have to say it is fantastic. You can rest assured that this is NOT a remake of any previous Gradius game, but an almost completely original title with some familiar locales. For instance, the first stage is actually stage 1 of the first Gradius but with some nasty twists, like a weather control system that can either make your experience through stage 1 very pleasant or extremely painful. The game has no edit mode, so you have three presets.
*speedup, missile, double, laser, option, front shield *speedup, two-way missile, tailgun, ripple laser, option, force field *speedup, bomb, vertical shot, double laser, option, front shield
The graphics are crisp considering the retro style, and the animation is flawless, with few instances of slowdown. As far as overall quality is concerned, it is a wonderful addition to any gradius fan's collection, and with 5 variable difficulties, not to mention the Konami code(pausing the game and hitting up, up, down, down, left, right, left, right, 1, 2 gives you 4 options free) allows a level of challenge for everyone. I would dare to say that this WiiWare title is up there in quality with Gradius V and Gradius Gaiden, and it can be best described as a successor to Gaiden, though not quite as good.
Overall an excellent choice if you are patient enough for a Gradius game.

Well it turns out this game still has a few surprises. After beating the game I unlocked two new weapon loadouts, each with a new paint job for the Vic Viper.
Loadout D came out like this: *Grey Vic Viper(no additional colors) *Speedup, Napalm missile, Double shot, Up laser(this fires a horizontal laser that actually travels straight up while the ship still fires a normal gun), Option(you can only have 2 options with this loadout), Front shield
Loadout E was like this: *Black Vic Viper with some red instead of blue *Speedup, Twin missile(this behaves like a twin hawk wind, where the missiles track the floor/ceiling), Vertical shot(you fire straight up and straight down), Vector laser(imagine the ripple laser, but this has a piercing effect), Option, Force field
Needless to say, this game may still have some surprises in store for me.
