Hello everyone, I've done a few enemies, but I never bothered to do Ninji.
So here he is in a new suit, and for those who like his original blue/purple outfit, I made that too.

They are pillowed, and they use WAY to many colors.

Someone like him could get away with 6, maybe 7 colors tops. You have 11.

To be honest, it's too light, YIDS or not. The arms are too low also.

Okay about the YIDS style, but you should've written this on the title or in the first post.

And the sprites doesn't look like YIDS style either.

I don't think it looks like YIDS, but I like the blue one! The red one has too light shading for me.
Also, they're just giving you suggestions! No need to get worked up. wink.gif

We are. We're saying it doesn't look like YIDS style, and that should be enough for you to make a better sprite. Also, I said "pillowshaded, rough outline, unnecessary AA", which need to be revised.

Don't be a noob. Take the criticism. You won't be able to learn from sympathetic "it's not bad" messages. These messages just make you do the exact same style that most people hate.

We are trying to be supportive, BTW. We're supporting you by giving you tips on how to improve your spriting.

Keep this in mind:
1) The ones who give good criticism are the ones that:
A) Have a magnifier on their mouse.
B) Copy the image, paste it in paint, and find any problems.

The one's who say "I love your sprites" Are usually the ones that just look at it from a distance, and don't bother to magnify it to see if it actually IS good (no offense).

If Shyguy Grey says something about it that isn't a good comment (And let me tell you, he has SUCH cute spriting skillz! *Hearts*), then that means you obviously need to fix it. YIDS was not exactly pilow shaded. It had a lightsource (I think....)

And it is pillowshaded, one of the biggest mistakes a spriter can make. I can't even find any other lightsource except for the middle.

For colors, a ninji is typically purple and white. Purple for the body, and white for the eyes and stuff.

You can get away with:
3 Shades of purple
1 white
1 black
2 shades of red. (Mouth)

That's 7 colors right there

you did this for red ninji:

5 shades of red
5 shades of blue
1 dark blue outlining

11 colors is way too much for a sprite that small

Look at SGG's sprites. At most, he'll use up to 4 shades per color. Look at some of Dex's (Project S.Q.U.I.R.E). At most, he'll have like 5 (or 6, I didn't count) shades for bigger things, like his Bee. His Bunny only uses up 4 colors, and yet it looks more like 8. You need to use your colors to give off the illusion it's more than just 6 colors.

Here' my rants:

1) On your blue ninji, that purplish highlight which I assume is the lightest shade of "blue", looks really strange.

2) Feet need to appear around. Those near black shades on the edges look ugly, and make it appear for square.

3) I hate how the hands constantly change size in the first 2, there's barely a difference, except for the fact that the hand goes up a size. Keep your size consistent.

Agreed 103%. Really, we're helping you but you don't even consider it.

Well thanks alot, and actually I was going to do 7 colors before, but I got carried away and made this.
I have Giant Ninji sprites, but they look like something that came out of a spriters garbage can. (NOT REFERING TO TSR)
Seriously, they look horrible.
But now I'll take you're advice, I'll fix him.

NOTE: KEEPING DARK BLUE OUTLINE

Okay, I fixed him. If there are still problems point them out.

well, now it doesn't look like a Ninji (no offense)...they have stubby limbs.

Aside from that, they're still a bit pillowed; some pixel switchings and should be fine.

I see you reduced the color limit. That's good, because it looks cleaner. Just unse a bit more of contrast on the red one.

EDIT- he also looks skinnier near the groin. make it a bit fatter.

Ninjis are pudgy. And yes, you still pillowed it.

What you really need to learn about is lineart, and shading

Here's a tutorial that should help you a bit:

Spriting Tutorial

This tutorial helped me a bit. It should help you as well. You don't need to do selective outlining (unless you want nice, non cartoonish Mario Sprites)

Next, I suggest getting a better spriting program. I assume you use MS Paint which is PERFECTLY ok.

However, you need a better one to help you get started.

Graphics Gale is a good spirter's program. Just download the free version:

Graphics Gale

It has many features MS Paint doesn't have. Don't worry though, it won't be in japanese, like the picture says.

Yes I use paint, but the sprites are made in GM7!
Paint I use to make the sheet, and I will fix his not so pudgy appearance later, right now I have to work on animating my yellow pokey.
