The Dark Knight quite possibly is the most hyped movie of all time. It started out small, but Heath Ledger's untimely passing as no doubt fueled the hype. Add in perfect reviews from everybody and you've got a monster before it ever premiers. After stepping out of the theater I've had one thought continuously running in my head. The Dark Knight is quite possibly the best movie I have ever seen.
I know what you're thinking, Mario Gamer has hyped a lot before and said he loved Pirates of the Caribbean 2. This cannot be mentioned in the same sentence as Pirates of the Caribbean. It's a whole new level. The first Batman (Talking Begins here) was good and a much needed refresher from the cartoony world of Bat nipples. Now that this world has been established, the director not only takes you back to it, but shows you things you never saw coming.
The real show here is indeed the new Joker. There was talks in one of the early reviews of an Academy Award nomination, which I thought would be out of pity. After seeing this movie I can only say that if he doesn't get a nomination, I will have lost all faith in the Academy. Heath Ledger not only creates a character that I've never seen before, there is not one single second where you think this is an actor. He is so dedicated to this completely sick character that it just feels real. It feels so real that the character does stuff you never saw coming, but stuff that makes you wonder why you didn't think of that. The character is so different that in tense moments, you get scared because you KNOW he's going to do what he's threatening. He is one of the best characters ever achieved on film. After this film I can see why Ledger was on medication after shooting, his character is simply amazing.
Jim Gordon is the second big star of the film who might receive more screen time then Batman himself. But in no way is this bad. Gary Oldman slips right back into a characters which shows his inter-self this time around. Aaron Eckhart is also fantastic as Harvey Dent, who is so well written that you begin to believe his personal philosophies. And Alfred (Michael Caine) is fantastic as usual. Batman is fine, but really takes a backseat to the rest of the cast, and this in no way feels wrong. The Batman films have always been like that.
The story is so well written that it follows a path that simply has not been done before. There's no real arc to the story, and if there is it's very well hidden. But this makes the film even better. There were four or five times I expected the film to end but it keeps on going. And you love every minute of it. The plots are so well conceived and detailed that it really feels like a criminal mastermind put it together. Not like some climax scene of a movie. It's got twists you never saw coming and things you never imagined in a movie. The story is the other big thing that makes this movie.
The special effects are also fantastic. None of this LOST CGI explosion crap. It's all real and it all feels real. The makeup is amazing and adds to the tone of the movie.
I've gone on and on about this movie and I'm going to stop here. I cannot think of one fault in this movie. I cannot think of one disappointment in this movie. Pirates of the Caribbean disappointed me but still provided a fantastic film. This film doesn't disappoint at all and has earned a place in my books as probably the best ever. My parents saw Star Wars in theaters, but I'm here to tell you this is our Star Wars. This masterpiece of a film cannot be topped as far as I'm concerned and the only thing I'm worried about is how the next film can get even close.
Enough talk. Go see this movie. I hate to sound cliché on this but for all the movies I've given a 10 to in the last four years, this doesn't even come close.
11/10
AND HERE WE GO
