QUOTE
When the publisher released a new patch for the RSV2 this month which added play modes and other goodies, customers were eager to update. Unfortunately the patch also added a check to confirm that a CD was in the PC before the game could play. This was obviously a problem for customers who downloaded the game through Direct2Drive and lacked physical media to validate.

Naturally, this theft prevention tool was meanwhile no problem for software pirates. A hacked executable removing the CD-check was soon readily available — although Ubisoft understandably forbade and punished discussion of the crack on its website forums when Direct2Drive customers came for help and advice.

Complaints about the physical media snafu kept coming, so a zip file was eventually uploaded by an Ubisoft employee to the help/support site, named "R6Vegas2_fix.zip."

But then Fileforums.com user Twingo discovered Ubisoft's little secret. The fix was, in fact, a cracked version of the .exe file modified by the pirate group 'Reloaded.'

oh Ubisoft.

Discuss.

I totally hate it when games require the CD to be played. I have to go for the crack then, even though I own the game.

This is why I make the trip to actually go out and get these games. I hate spending time looking for these things or a CDkey-gen

Capcom is so very guilty of this (The former, that is).

I bet it fixed their problems!

honestly, the paying customers of many DRM-ridden PC games these days are the ones that get screwed, not the pirates who get the cracked version for free that has the DRM and copy-protection removed for them.
publishers need to realize this and fix this problem so that their paying customers get an equivalent or superior playing experience than those who copy the cracked versions. you know, to give people incentive to go out and buy the games.
by "fix" I mean "get rid of the copy-protection and focus on making a quality product that works for everyone"

I can somewhat understand the need for a password install thing but I've never seen a reason why the whole game can't be installed onto the hard-drive of a PC. I mean it would shorten loading times too no doubt too.

Though I also see no reason why some of these games can't be run straight off the disc as well. But that's another story. I'm also not a PC gamer because this PC can't handle anything from the last 5 or so years.

typically games do install the whole thing onto the hard disk. they just require the CD/DVD to be in the drive while you're playing to be sure you "own" a copy.
which is why no-cd cracks are popular even among people who legitimately paid for a given copy-protected game. now, having to resort to shady means to get something you paid for to work properly is all sorts of wrong, but it gets the job done. it really shouldn't be necessary in the first place though.

This is essentially the point. Ubisoft made a downloadable CD-less version of the game, but the updated version looks for a CD... that the owner does not have.
