| QUOTE | | Last I checked, most of the theories being brought up here are "if" concepts. So I don't know what you're trying to prove, but redundancy doesn't make your argument anymore valid. Sorry. |
My argument is that the universe is accelerating, for which there is plenty of evidence as indicated.
| QUOTE | | Also, while, yes, it is still indubitably expanding, scientists are still debating whether the universe is accelerating or decelerating. |
First off, the article you linked is from 1956. We've made a few discoveries since then, mainly, the accelerating universe.
| QUOTE | | Regardless -- yes, things in motion tend to stay in motion only if other forces aren't exerted on them. Such as gravity, pressure, temperature (as Draco mentioned), entropy, friction (as you mentioned), etc. |
Yes, exactly. There are forces acting on it... pushing it, causing to to accelerate. These forces being mainly, negative pressure ("gravitational repulsion") caused by dark matter.
Temperature and entropy aren't exactly forces. They're measurements.
| QUOTE | | Also just because it's not slowing down now (which is still not a positive fact, mind you), doesn't mean it won't some time in the near or distant future. |
Of course nothing is certain except that there is evidence to show that it is speeding up. When dealing with something as big as the universe, of course we can't be 100%, but we have to go with what we're given, which is evidence that the universe is accelerating. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Type_Ia_supernovae#Light_curve| QUOTE | | You even said that some of the going-ons of the universe should, in theory, eventually slow it down, so by saying, then, it never will, you are out and out contradicting yourself. |
No. I'm not contradicting myself. I said if things were to be working as expected at a basic level (which they are NOT) it would be slowing down (which it ISN'T)
| QUOTE | | You essentially stated "The universe should slow down due to the factors within it, but it hasn't." Well, no. Not yet. Also, keep in mind -- friction isn't the only thing that can slow things down (as stated above). |
Any sort of force in the opposite direction could slow it down, yes.
The whole theory of a "big crunch" is really just based on our lack of knowledge regarding dark matter. As far as we know, dark matter COULD perform a switch, causing it to make matter deaccelerate ("big crunch") or accelerate further ("big rip"). However, as far as I've read (including the links you sent) don't really offer any evidence to show that it could or will. They even say
| QUOTE | | But then, out of the blue, something completely crazy happens. |
Well, okay, if that DID happen, yes, those would be the results, but what would cause this? What evidence is there to suggest this sort of switch could happen, besides "we don't know much about it" because that goes both ways. As far as the observable evidence we have (that I know of) dark matter wouldn't just randomly switch and cause things to head in the other direction.
if you read your own link...
| QUOTE | | But will the Universe really vanish? At the moment, most cosmologists don't think so. The latest evidence suggests that the Universe will keep expanding forever, becoming an ever emptier and colder place. Yes, that gives some problems of it's own -- but that's another story. |

| QUOTE (Mrs. Aforcer @ Jul 22 2008, 08:19 AM) | I secede, FuzzMaster.
Partly because admittedly physics (much less any of the sciences) isn't my strong point, and partly because I'm afraid we're getting a tad off-topic.
But thank you for the enlightening debate. I learned some things that surprisingly contradict ideas I've heard muttered about Caltech and JPL (campuses which I regrettably spent too much time at in my childhood). |
it's fine, i learned a bit myself

| QUOTE (PSI Guy @ Jul 22 2008, 03:21 AM) | dunno if this has been addressed or anything but
Just because we don't know the meaning of life or existance of such meaning, it doesn't mean it's automatically non-existant. Imagine the ability to detect xyz. That would be a sense, I believe. We don't know of this sense (unless I told you about it), because we are not capable of comparing this sense to something we have or possess the sense. It is otherise non-existant: unless we can look at this sense and define it, we will never be able to know of this sense. Likewise, there might be a meaning to life, but we cannot look at it from a creator's angle, so we can only guess what it is like.
tldr, just because we can't smell doesn't mean there isn't a scent |
And just because we don't have the magical sombrero of Al Dante, which could be the only possible way to find Maglobo, the ancient water monkey that created Mexico, doesn't mean Maglobo doesn't exist.
But since when does that mean we should go looking for Him?

I was judging by your username.
Sorry, I figured addressing people by their usernames in an anonymous domain such as the internet was standard protocol. My bad.
