BLOOMINGTON, Minn. - A Minnesota high school has teacher lasted 20 hours on a roller coaster to win the Ride the Tide Challenge at the Mall of America.

Jim Salava, 40, of Oakdale, was declared the winner at the Nickelodeon Universe theme park when his final opponent stepped down at 2:35 a.m. Tuesday.

Salava was among 10 riders who boarded the Avatar Airbender at 6:30 a.m. Monday. The pool dwindled to three riders just three hours into the competition.

The Avatar Airbender averages 69 km/h and reaches heights of 21 metres. Other than bathroom and meal breaks, contestants remained on the ride at all times - even to sleep.

The top prize includes a family cruise, $1,000 spending cash and a lifetime pass to the theme park.

You could just sleep more the next day..
I don't think that a person who rides a roller-coaster for 20 hours is that nitpicky about the hours of sleep a day.

Doesn't work. Body doesn't let you borrow 4 today and add it tomorrow, you'll feel that four for a week.

The healthiest amount of time a human can sleep for is 4-7 hours a night so he'll be fine.

Oh god, 4-7? I've done four, it's not healthy. You wake up dead. Seriously.

You need six to eight.

Red Bull and lots of it, I guess.
20 hours without sleep or food sounds a bit too crazy for anyone to attempt.
EDIT: Oh, they got food.

It's been scientifically PROVEN that between 4-7 allows you to live longer.

And besides, it's quite easy to break a circadian rythm so you CAN borrow hours from the next day, not to mention that your rythm is actually 25 hours and just gets reset, so if he can't break his he gets atleast 5 hours.

Then I guess I am the exception to the rule, eh? Every time I don't get 6-8, I feel like killing myself. :]

Same here. If I wake up in the middle of the night for water or whatever, even if it's only five minutes, I wake up more tired than when I went to sleep.

Eh, depends on how -bad- the ride is I guess. Like if it's really jerky and has those uber long drops then no way, but if the ride is fairly tame I can see myself getting bored enough to sleep.

That's got to be the slowest ride ever. Challenged only by the common merry-go-round.
