That hack actually blows because the moment you touch anything that could kill Sonic in the original game, it locks up.

No, just spikes (or crushers?). Enemies don't kill him. LOst (the guy who made this) had to rewrite parts of the engine from scratch (this was before the first Sonic 1 disassembly was released, IIRC; imagine changing all those pointers and writing code using only a hex editor!), so I guess he forgot a death sequence.

While we're talking about Sonic hacks, look at this. (Swear warning, if ass counts.) The entire hack is a big in-joke, but it's pretty impressive =P

I thought it was awesome. ...Then he came in contact with one of the poles Sonic and Shadow swing around and the game froze. Though they didn't program Knuckles to react to those, he was still able to make it pretty far. -------------------- Ref Here
