I just have the regular jumping events then in the release event for the jump key I have it check if you are still moving upwards then I set the vspeed to half

if vspeed<0
then vspeed=vspeed/2

that'll work, it's hard to figure out how quickly to stop the jump when you let go, i usually experiment to find a decent feel
