So I did some pixel art for the first time in months whether it gets any further than this remains to be seen Possibly more to come, depends on my mood. Example: The indent under Sonic has dark ground. I wonder if it would be possible to put this tileset into a hack...It still has only 29 unique colors, which leaves 19 colors left in the level palette (Sonic takes up 16 colors) for the background art. you may be onto something about those indents there laddie

as for hacking, I'm guessing it's more-or-less possible. I've had a go at hacking Sonic 1 a few times and there are more colours available than what Sonic Team used for the ground tiles. Obviously though since the springs and whatnot use Sonic's palette, you'd have some colour loss there.
