cheap way would be to give it bouncing ball movement on its return trip and always change its direction to point towards the player

There's another problem. It shoots over the object's head.

There's another problem. It shoots over the object's head.

Either center a hot spot on the player, or the boomerang.

A hot spot tells where the boomerang(or any object) will come from. To change it, go into the animation editor, click the icon that looks like an eye, and position it to where ever you want.

make sure you set a hot spot for the boomerang too.

if you're using the built-in shooting functions, it's probably a better idea to use the action point instead of the hotspot

the hotspot defines the object's 0,0 point (which itself is the "pinning" point for scaling, rotation, animation frames, etc) and it's generally a bad idea to move that around if you don't have a reason to

the action point doesn't define anything apart from being an created object originator point so moving it around shouldn't hurt
