Agave Blue Strat, A pixelart piece of my own guitar.

I got the idea of spriting my own guitar, an agave blue stratocaster. Go look it up on Google images if you don't know what one looks like.



I have so many blues because I've been comparing the best contrasts that I can use. I've already added the curved part of the guitar (the random line is where the surface suddenly dips). I also only have 5 tone keys... obviously, a real guitar has 6 I know. It won't exactly fit and I like the size as is. Same for the strings, I can really only fit two on the fretboard so I'm just probably going to leave them off. Also, I know the part above the fretboard is a little odd... I'm still working on the shape.

Ideas?

The shape is good, but the colors, not so much. It looks a little too dark when it starts going down left, considering the shape of guitars I've seen...

Makes it look boxy. I know that's not right.

For one, I've got my guitar right in front of me. And it's not exactly like a Squire as most people think (Fender Squire is the most common guitar sold) and the shape IS different. As for boxy... eh... it needs some sort of contrast on the fretboard. I just shined a light from the right in a dark room and that's what it looked like which technically would be a rational lightsource.

It's got contrast. Just too much; that's why it looks like a box rather than a flat board.

For references, it's always best to get a well-lit subject. In the dark, you could accidentally miss an important thing, or end up with a lot of flaws.

Yeah I started in a well lit room and found there to be no contrast whatsoever and I know it wouldn't look right being one solid color. And I don't know how many flaws you would have in this situation... but in others I can see what you're saying.

But overall (besides the contrast), the browns look ok right?

Just because there's no contrast doesn't mean it's a bad thing. You have a base color from which to base your shades off of.

And the browns, they don't look good. One looks too dark, and the other too light...

And in the dark, several details could be missed, and bad details formed.

Ok I changed it a bit... and when I looked at the surface of the fretboard, it is somewhat curved. I think what had the biggest impact on the boxyness was the part of the fretboard that connects to the guitar. The edge is rounded, making the fretboard seem to change shape.

I'd suggest a little more dithering between the shades... it still looks a bit boxy.

I guess you noticed the single dither line then... I'm probably leaving the strings off. What do you think since only two will fit inside of the edges and I don't want the guitar to become huge?

I dunno. Really, that's one problem that can only be solved by making it bigger.

Okay I tried three lines of dithering... and it destroyed what contrast there is. I stuck with two. I also added the darker brown line on the left outline to give it more definition.

The body of the axe seems really wide and fat. I'd say to bring in the horns (the parts of the body that look like horns) in some. Bring the rest of the body in, too. Make it thinner and more stream-lined is what I'm getting at. This is not a super-huge hollow-body, after all!

It does look good, though. For strings, I don't know what to say. You can only do so much with a piece of pixelart of the size you have now to make the strings look realistic.

And I'll try to finish shading the body by tomorrow night if possible. I'll do some tweaking after that.

I thought it was pretty descriptive. He told you it was a little too thick, to bring in the horns a little bit, and such.

But I've heard the term elsewhere.

Haha if you don't play a guitar, I doubt anyone will expect you to know. And I don't know... I've actually never heard it called that in my years of playing... seems plausible though.
