The Half-Life 2 demo won't display graphics.

So I installed the demo onto my mom's computer; started it up, and waited for the title screen to load.

It did, so I picked Options, put the game in a window, set just about everything in the Advanced tab for graphics to the lowest settings.

Everything seemed fine; until I started a new game.

Literally nothing would appear; all I got was the sound from the opening cutscene accompanied by the flashes of white from it.

After it ended, the graphics for the first level wouldn't appear, so I stared at a black screen with the crosshairs.

(the text for the level did appear, but I doubt that's important)

Does anyone know what I should do here?
