Community Fangame Project #2

In this topic members of MFGG help to make a final decission in what direction the CFP#2 will go.


What we have so far (conceptwise):
-Simple Mario engine with as few as possible moves (jump, run, pick up, ladders, duck)
-Four playable plumbers
-Different specifications
-One unique special move for each
-No forcing players to use a certain character: The game should be able to be played through (without finding all secrets, that is) by using each of the four characters. The differences only serve the purpose of more variety and to go different paths.

Then in the previous topic we've had five questions and now it's time to DECIDE:




Before you proceed: Make sure to read and understand the rules of this:
- Read the question.
- Evaluate EACH option with either: YES, NO or OK (depending on if you want to have that in the game or not)
- all options are evaluated independant of each other, that means you can give two YESses for the same question, you can give two NOes and one OK etc.
- Post this in this topic.

-Edit: Please: If you say "NO" to an option, please give a reason why! If you already cast your votes and read this now, please add that to your post!

1) Do we want a Worldmap or a Hub World?
a) Worldmap

2) Should we be able to switch between the bros during gameplay or only outside of the levels?
a) Only outside of the levels (on the worldmap/hub)
b) During gameplay

3) Special abilities for the brothers?

i) Mario: Mario gets the wallkick that has been decided in the last topic.
ii) Luigi: Luigi gets a super-jump (SMB2 style) and his flutterjump (the flutterjump alone is not powerful enough to serve as a special ability, so he gets both of the mentioned ideas)
iii) Wario: Wario gets the Charge Attack.
iv) Waluigi:
a) being able to run on water
b) being able to run on walls
c) throw bombs

4) Health System:
a) SM64ish system
b) RPGish system

5) The collectibles are not subject of the vote as they can all be implemented sooner or later.
The top suggestions however, were:
-Ace Coins
-Expandable Stats
-Extra Levels (probably covered by the multiple paths accessible through the different Bros. abilities)





If we get through this we can finally start to work on the engine and once we can present an engine, BS will give us our own SUBFORUM.

You did like, not read the post?
You were supposed to evaluate ALL of the options that way we'd make sure to get a kind of compromise.

Note: Luigi's flutterjump does not require any special programming; just change his default jump impetus and max fall rate.
a) No, water is too uncommon
b) Borderline OK, run-able walls are uncommon
c) Ok (preferred). I'm still of the opinion that special moves should require FP to prevent rampant abuse, so after a couple Bob-Ombs you'd have to recharge your FP somehow.

I know that thing about the flutter jump. That's why I said Luigi gets that additionally to the super-jump.

and I agree with your argument about the bombs.
I also thought that they should of course be limitted if they are used. Either he can throw one and then recover after a few seconds, or he has a limitted ammo and recovers with coins or anything else.
The other moves however I don't think should need FP, as they're not so cheap as a ****load of bombs.

A hub world could maybe have special levels within it, but a world map would work just as well.

Being only able to switch outside levels may help the player think about who'd be more useful for that level, and an incentive to replay levels for paths that can only be used by one brother,

3) Special abilities for the brothers?
c) throw bombs
Eh, I just like this one more.

b) OK
Both seem nice, but I prefer the SM64 system.

5) The collectibles are not subject of the vote as they can all be implemented sooner or later.
The Ace Coins could be used for buying access to new levels, so you could combine those two, I guess.

B) No, worldmaps keep things simple and easy to see as compared to hubs, where you'll get lost and confused.

a) No, being able to swap brothers as you go makes for some good puzzling opportunities.

a) Yes
b) OK
c) Yes, if the bombs can hurt you. This could provide Waluigi with a rocketjump type thing as well as a path finder.

a) Yes, it's simple.
