He wins 8 gold JUST because there has to be like 20 different swims. Why not just something like 500m, 1km and some other swim? Why there needs to be 10m, 20m, 30m, 9395cm etc.?

Different balances of strength and endurance. Only having 500m and 1km wouldn't properly test strength.
