OK, I used cheats to assist in making this, Those floating platforms will actually go down into the spikes dealing damage if you are standing on them when they get that low I may remove the boarder walls. Ocarina is a very handy and fun tool, granting such features(in Brawl in this case) as a limitless pause camera(potential for some awesome screenshots) and, like you said, no limits to your creative stage-building mind. No, you're not doing something wrong, booting a game via Ocarina disables the SD card functionality, though you can always make what you want, reboot the game without Ocarina, then copy whatever you made onto the card. One of my favorite Ocarina cheats, btw, changes the curry item to spew out firecrackers instead. Hilarious.
