someone may have mentioned this already but:

user posted image user posted image user posted image user posted image user posted image user posted image user posted image etc (c/c++, lua, python, and so on)

imo these are more relevant than country flags

EDIT: although those might work better as badges that members could add through their profile

EDIT 2: user posted image

obviously it wouldn't necessarily be limited to just those, but

I'm thinking if that was installed where the flags are too it might be a bit cluttered.

So I dunno, perhaps below the group icon or something?

Also there'll probably be some difficulty finding icons for things like C++ and whatnot

For the other languages that we don't have an icon on we could just use the question block, again.

In a slightly related note - we could use the Lua/Python/Java/whatever icons for the main site as well. Broaden our howto section by letting in real code.

Regarding the "bilingual" thing: People should probably just enter the program that they use the most often.

I use both GM6 and GM7, but I use GM6 more often, so that's what I would put on my profile if this were implemented.

well that's why i suggested badges

about "bilingual", that's also another benefit of the badge system; it supports more than one badge so you could have multiple languages

not like they'd HAVE to be actual badges but i figured it'd be easier to use the existing system than create an entirely new one, maybe they could use the badge system but be treated as special cases, in which case they'd pop up somewhere else

it'd be cluttered, but imo we could take RII's idea and have them in the profile field (or maybe in a mouse-over pop-up box somewhere

EDIT: or maybe buttons/links under the badges that can switch between viewing badges and viewing languages

It probably would have gone next to posts, but the flags are already there, and putting both icons next to posts would be difficult.

I'd just as soon see the game development icons replacing the flags next to posts, since people abuse the flag field to blazes and back (Black Squirrel, whatever happened to the possible ban for that?), but would be much less likely to abuse a feature like this. IMO the more practically useful something is, the better an idea it is to show up next to posts.

However, I realize that such a replacement is most likely not an option, because it would likely constitute some undoing of previous work. That's understandable. (Though technically I'm not sure how hard it would be to just switch the code to apply to a similar but distinct profile field, but eh.)

Actually, come to think of it, in theory maybe icons like these could be placed to the right of the member group icons. Problem is the extra horizontal space, but I don't know how much that would matter, especially if only one icon was allowed. (Some people's avatars cause the table to extend well beyond the group icon anyway.)

Not pressuring, of course; it's just a momentary idea. I'm perfectly fine with RII's wish to keep it profile-page-only, personally.
