Well, Grant, if you were an admin or mod would you like to do a whois IP check on every single member you thought might be lying about their country just so that you can ban them and deal with all kinds of complaints?

What somebody inputs into their profile is of no concern to anyone but them. We're not going to have background checks to see if everything in their profile is accurate. Why it bothers you in the first place is a mystery to me since you can't really do anything with such "information" as what country a person lives in.

Sure it's annoying that people don't want to use features appropriately but it's not like anyone can be harmed or offended by the misuse of it.

Anyways considering we're a fangaming forum I would consider replacing the flags with the game maker icons if there's room for the game maker icons.

Anyone remember the Location field?
Well, did anyone actually use their real location in there?
Well, was anyone banned for that?

Why are the flags any different? Just because they're images?

I wouldn't, seeing as I put so much time into making flags in the first place!

Anyway tbh we don't really need the software icons right next to the username. I mean half of MFGG wouldn't even be using them. I like the flags. Stops people assuming I'm American. Loads of other forums have flags and nobody questions their purpose.

Better to have the software icons on a profile page or below the group icon or something, as suggested. As I said, we're going to be stuggling to find decent icons for some of the main programming languages anyway. And if you've got more than one langauge attached to your brain tables are going to be stretched (those software icons are 19x19 as opposed to 16x16) and it'll look awful (and seeing as MMF2 experience almost instantly grants you KNP, TGF, MMF, MMFE, CNC and TGF2 experience... well you can see where I'm going with that). And they all need work so that they don't look ugly on the DS skins and whatnot too.

But it would be nice to have the option on the main site for tutorials made with things like Java and C and whatever. I mean we keep preaching that the "true" programming languages are better than GameMaker and Clickteam products but there's no site support for them!

I didn't say the needed to replace the flags, but if there were no other option then that would do.
But yeah, IMO we totally need this as I hate the fact that I can't tell if people are Game Makers or MMFers.

I suppose in theory we could add an extra couple of post icons, though I can't guarantee people would use them.

Though a top tip would be "everyone uses GameMaker except oldbies and a select few people which you should be able to remember"

Yeah, from what's been said here it sounds like the best idea would probably be to just make a field that shows up on the profile pages, like RII was saying.

@SonicProject: It seems to me that a good enough reason to crack down on that, at least before, was because Black Squirrel obviously didn't like people abusing it and he had put time and effort into making the flag icons. Although it's a moot point now if Black Squirrel has stopped caring about it (though I never heard him say that).

in theory, yes, but that doesn't mean someone who uses MMF2 can always help someone using TGF1 since they have wildly different feature sets (and occasionally bugs), and said MMF2 user may have never used any pre-MMF2 program so they wouldn't know what could or couldn't be done in TGF1

EDIT: also, just make generic icons for languages that don't have an official logo

EDIT 2: i posted this on the last page but imo it would solve the clutter issue

user posted image

basically when you click "View tools" it replaces the badges with the program icons, vice-versa for "View Badges"

maybe there could even be another profile option for which icon set you want displayed by default

For languages that don't have icons, just make up a quick one! (C++ being the letters C++ written in whatever editor's text color is common with matching background color?) Maybe give them all small borders with a colored BG/box that looks good for that icon, so that they don't need to work for every skin?

Haha, that's awesome. We should definitely have the programming field installed. It's much more relevant than the country flag system.

If I had the motivation, I'd redo some of those icons cause they're gonna look oogley on a lot of our skins.

But I don't.

except you should probably limit the number of programs/languages you can set.

Use them if you wish, I won't be offended if you don't. I did this just for fun.

there's no real reason to have to limit the colours here

I limited the amount on the flags because they're supposed to look like SMB3 blocks.

And tbh yours don't look... fantastic. Mine were quick resizes but I think it would be a lot better just to clean those up.
