| QUOTE | College presidents from about 100 of the nation's best-known universities, including Duke, Dartmouth and Ohio State, are calling on lawmakers to consider lowering the drinking age from 21 to 18, saying current laws actually encourage dangerous binge drinking on campus, according to a report from The Associated Press.
The movement is called the Amethyst Initiative.
Mothers Against Drunk Driving told the AP lowering the drinking age would lead to more fatal car crashes, though both say underage drinking is a problem.
A recent AP analysis of federal records found that 157 college-age people, 18 to 23, drank themselves to death from 1999 through 2005.
"It's always a concern," State Patrol trooper Keith Trowbridge said of local underage drinking.
For the past decade, officers from the King County Sheriff's Office and several King County police departments, along with the Liquor Control Board, have teamed up each June to crack down on underage parties around prom and graduation time, P-I reporter Scott Gutierrez reported earlier this year. The goal is to prevent drunken driving and alcohol-related deaths.
During the first weekend in June, the Party Patrol cited 140 people for alcohol and drug violations, including two adults who face felony drug charges for Ecstasy taken from the home where they were hosting a party for underage drinkers.
Trowbridge said most of the drunken drivers the State Patrol sees are over 21, but troopers consistently find underage drivers.
"There are not particular locations, but there may be a little increase in spring and summer after graduations and things like that," he said.
So far, no Washington-based schools are on board with the campaign to lower the drinking age. To see a list of the college presidents who want to rethink the minimum drinking age, follow this link. |
SUMMARY: College presidents want to lower the drinking age in the United States from 21 years old to 18 years old due to underage drinking and other major alcohol related cases.
I'll be able to legally drink next year if this passes.

this topic isn't about HURRR I HATE ALL ALCOHOL BECAUSE I HAD ONE CRAPPY BRAND it's about what will happen if you lower the drinking age. I'm all for it. Kids will more likely experiment with it, and thus get a handle on it earlier and not make fatal decisions
hopefully
